To find dd's new school really hard work?

DD (4) has just started school this year, so this is all new to me. I didn't realise it would be so difficult. I thought we'd just rock up there in the morning with her clean and ironed-ish school uniform, meet her in the afternoon with a bag of fruit flakes in my pocket and that's it, job done.

I knew it would be trickier than I thought when we got the little booklet showing us how to shape our letters when practising writing with our dcs. Then there were the friendly reminders about baking money, sponsorship money, art money etc.

Now I've got to think of a fancy dress costume ("A rock star or a pop star or a celebrity" wtf?) for Children in Need and make it by Friday.

I can't think of anything so when you're posting to tell me yes, IABU, can you also please suggest a pop star/rock star/celebrity costume I can make/buy for a fiver. Ta.

leggings, skirt, bright top, bit of glitter= any young female pop star..hannah montana/miley cyrus for example.

HumphreyCobbler · 14/11/2009 20:58

Well I don't think much of their theme for children in need. What is wrong with favourite character from a book? I didn't think most four year olds were that in touch with celebrity culture.

MrsMalcolmTucker · 14/11/2009 21:01

Well that's my problem really, Humphrey. Once you start thinking about it, you realise just how sexualised most female pop/rock singers are. She's 4 ffs, I don't really want to dress her up like Madonna!

Am off to google hannah montana, thank you ruddy norah.

i agree with HumphreyCobbler - my DS is also 4 and has no idea who any rock star/celebrity is ... long may it last.. i know what you mean about school being such hard work though. I'm amazed too - it's a full time job keeping on top of all the letters and sponsor forms and 'home learning' that they get in their book-bags every afternoon. I thought i'd done well with having a clean shirt for him every morning.

JANEITEisntErudite · 14/11/2009 21:04

I would not be impressed by a school that wanted four year olds to dress like rock stars.

Heated · 14/11/2009 21:08

I'm with you MrsMalcolmTucker on the blardy short notice for costume.

I know that ds is rehearsing something for the Christmas play as he has to dance with a girl and he's learning a couple of songs but there's not a hint about what they want them to wear. I failed last time on the waistcoat and Victorian cloth cap with 2 days notice. Last Christmas he was a king, so was easy enough to sort out; was forever grateful he wasn't the camel!

Feenie · 14/11/2009 21:08

Oh fgs, it's only a bit of fun. They're not asking for them to come as the Pussycat Dolls.

Heated · 14/11/2009 21:12

And ditto with the theme, inappropriate for 4yr olds. Now pirates or animals, yes.

Send her as Peppa Pig or Noddy, they're celebrities in this house.

ruddynorah · 14/11/2009 21:12

i would imagine most of the 4 year old boys will dress as a celebrity footballer, and the girls will dress as a HSM character or hannah montana. ie football kit or party clothes.

MrsMalcolmTucker · 14/11/2009 21:19

Footballer....now there's an idea as well.

Don't even get me started on Christmas. I've got to do a fecking star costume in a couple of weeks. I'm thinking lots of tinsel and her gold party shoes.

YANBU - I know what you mean. It's the name tags and different sets of shoes that are my nemesis. I'd just got the hang of it and everything changed at half term.

For the costume, I suggest a pair of sun glasses, jeans, sweatshirt and a microphone made out of a kitchen roll tube and tennis ball. He can be a generic pop star (and I doubt it will even cost you £5). Get your revenge by instructing him to sing Bros 'When will I be famous' at all possible opportunities really loudly into his pretend microphone

Asda have silver star costumes! About £8 if i remember correctly....

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/11/2009 22:07

Only a fiver actually! I just got one!

BikiniBottom · 14/11/2009 22:15

What about Carrie from the music programme on cbeebies Carrie and david's Pop Shop. She wears jeans and a pink top and much more age appropriate than any of the others. Plus I know what you mean, my dd didn't have a clue about who was and was not a pop star at that age but she might know Carrie.

MrsMalcolmTucker · 14/11/2009 22:21

Fantastic suggestions - thank you.

Am now thinking either Carrie Popshop (will check pink tops) or Hannah Montana - because dd has long blonde hair - in sparkly top and sunglasses.

And will be going to Asda for star costume.

Thank you very much o Mumsnet experts.

Off to bed now.

From the other end of the school age group, DS in Year 6 cannot bear dressing up for school things like this. He ( and all of his mates, boys and girls ) think it is a nightmare to have to dress up as a book character / Victorian / whatever bollocks. The one in the OP would have them running for the hills.

I expect it was one theme for the whole school, so they were trying to think of something that would suit a whole range of ages. But I wish they wouldn't.

saggyhairyarse · 14/11/2009 22:58

Piratey outfit, plaster over her nose - Adam Ant?

MrsMalcolmTucker · 15/11/2009 21:43

Thanks to everyone for suggestions - have been to asda today and got a sparkly top, skirt and microphone so she can be Hannah Montana with her hair up and a pair of my sunglasses. I also got a lovely star costume for Christmas - bonus!

Thanks again for the help - and for reassuring me that I'm not alone in finding the school fun stuff a PITA.

cheers
