to think you really do not need to chase after your toddler spoon feeding them at a busy playgroup??

We go to a quite big busy playgroup every Friday. The same woman has been bringing her toddler (probably 18moish) and has brought her meal of mushed up whatever and yoghurt with her.
She feeds the child at the same time every week 11ish. Fair enough if child is used to eating at that time. However, she really does not look at all interested in the food. More interested in playing (surely the point of playgroup)

Week 1- child force spoon fed whilst playing with a toy car garage.

Week 2- at the top of a slide.

Week 3- at the bottom of the slide (even though other children waiting to slide down)

I have noticed lots of people doing this.

What I'm wondering is- if the child is genuinely hungry wouldn't they come over to you to be fed?

Why can't the parent take the child to a chair at side of room and feed them there?

These groups last 2 hours. Can't the child be fed before/after??

Don't know why it's bothering me so much but REALLY grated on me this week..

I think it's a bit grotty. And probably unneccessary and a bit daft.

LOL at girls' table manners comment.

The only way that I could get any food down ds was to feed him sandwiches throughout the morning. He wouldn't eat anything sitting down for about a year. And yes I tried on and off, once for a three week period. If he ate while we were out he would then have a nap in the car on the way home, otherwise he would have no nap either.

I expect I would have offended you greatly.

I avoided messy spoon food though.

hobnobs - well, I was rather shocked by you making that suggestion. I can't think of a worse insult to throw at someone, tbh.

Crazycatlady · 13/11/2009 20:31

This does sound a little odd. Cultural differences aside it is inconsiderate to feed a child in this manner at a busy playgroup.

Even if there is minimal mess, other kids will see the food and want it, and then of course it's terrifying for mums of allergic children (DD grabbed an abandoned beaker of milk at sing and sign this morning, she's very allergic to milk...managed to swipe it from her before she took any but my heart was pounding in my throat!)

I go to a 12.30 to 1530 toddler group (play centre for under 5's) and take sandwiches for my 3 year old and spoon feed my 15 month old something whilst she sits on my knee.
No, I would not chase a toddler round a group with a spoon..especially not at 11 am and getting in the way of other kids playing.

Cyprus, Italy, Greece... Hmm yes, I was on the other side of the Med.... so fits!

Oh yes, My Ds was on GinaF routine, but there was no way it was like that... and I used to leave the house all the time..

It revolutionised my life and gave me the ability to get out, before I was stuck in...

Won't have a word said against St Gina, her advice works every time...

MrsSaxon · 14/11/2009 11:13

I am with groundhogs on this, no way is that a Gina Ford bambino.

GF also made my life much easier, and so much more relaxed.

Anyhoo, my friend chases her 22 month around feeding mush and it frankly looks exhausting, each to their own though.

girlsyearapart · 14/11/2009 14:40

GF is quite strict though isn't she? so I doubt she advocates running after the child feeding them whilst they play??

Know some friends who have been successful on GF but when I read the book I couldn't work out when I was meant to walk the dog as the baby would sleep in the pram..

Agree doesn't sound like GF! Sure she'd be horrified at chasing a toddler round with a spoon, surely they'd be sitting up at the table feeding themselves?
