You're lucky he put a reason, my DS when he was at school would have just answered 'no'

YANBU - If he's old enough to learn about ammonia, he's old enough to answer the question properly. Let him get marked down for it instead of correcting it for him. He'll learn quicker if punished mwah ha ha

On some exam papers though you don't have to answer in full sentences any more as it saves time. I think my Science GCSE was like this and I only took them in 2004. There is not even space on the paper to write a full answer, because you are not expected to.
