To think this lady in cafe was BU?

I was in a cafe yesterday and the cafe owner took great offence to (and even went and had a word with) three customers sharing a pot of tea for two.

I thought this was a bit mean. OK so the tea wasn't that expensive anyway but surely they would only be getting 2/3 of a cup each anyway, it's not like they magically got more by only paying for a pot of tea for 2.

but hercules and thrifty, you get people sitting in seats for ages sipping one cup, when 3 or four other groups of customers have moved out of the way.

if it were really busy in the cafe, i can understand the chari issue, but if not, then it's just good service to be nice to customers.
or they won't go back and she's lost another sale.

I agree about deserts and children.

you do thedevileatsbabies, its true. I'm not saying its good to be mean to customers. just that in this case i thought the customers were being cheeky to ask for an extra cup. especially as the op says that the tea was not expensive.

YANBU... pots of tea for 2 usually contain about 4 cups anyway. Provided they weren't expecting free refils or extra milk or something I can't see the problem. It's no different from buying a can of coke and asking for two straws!

Perhaps one of them has a medical problem which means they cannot take a lot of liquid. Just wanted a quick burst of refreshment but have continence issues? Or just wasn't thirsty, but wanted to sit with their friends?

My parents and their friend went for lunch somewhere and my dad had a normal adult meal, but my mum and the friend shared a kids meal. Now that is embarrassing.

I think it's mean of the cafe owner and quite petty but remember when I used to work in a coffee shop we sold pots of tea which were "supposed" to be for one so if people asked to share it we were supposed to refuse them extra cup and tell them off for it. I think it's silly, will just put the customer off returning when treated like that

I often go out with my mum for lunch and share a large sandwich/panini followed by a large slice of cake. note the word large - lunchtime isn't my main meal of the day and it's just too much quantity-wise to have a whole one of each ... i'd have a whole cup of tea though, lol.
