to be hacked off with people on TV that wear a 'poppy with pride'?

I will be wearing mine, as soon as I find someone selling them. I'm sure I will over the next few days.

But, every single 'live' programme that I see, from The News to Deal or No Deal, everyone is wearing a poppy. It's like the directors have insisted that they must wear one, regardless of whether they actually care or not.

Don't get me wrong, I care very much indeed and will alway wear mine with pride and thanks, for all those soliders and their families.

I feel almost like they are belittling the importance of the poppy.

Oh, I don't know!! Maybe I'm thinking about it too much, but it really gets on my wick!!

everyone on telly is so worried they will offend someone it's crap.

BunnyLebowski · 29/10/2009 22:56

That's just not on Maureen

I remember my da nearly launching the telly through the window after about 95 hours of constant Diana-related wailing and gnashing of teeth. The sanctimonious fuckers.

On another note whatever that animal is on your profile I want to eat it.....all of it.

MaureenMLove · 29/10/2009 23:01

Oh, it's a hog roast and there's still some in my freezer! The party was June!!

Seriously cat64?

The point is that's your choice to buy and wear your poppy.

Why should it be compulsory for everyone?

LadyEvenstarsCauldren · 29/10/2009 23:31

I will be wearing my poppy with pride once I find someone who sells White ones.

diddl · 30/10/2009 07:36

But you usually have them pinned on a coat, not "indoor" clothing?

So that for most people, it wouldn´t be seen at work, unless you wear your coat at work?

PeterDominic · 30/10/2009 07:44

oh god white ones are a pile of shit

CornishKK · 30/10/2009 08:19

I was hosting a Financial Services conference one year and was TOLD to wear a poppy by my director, that annoyed me.

I always buy a poppy (brother in the army and father in the air force) but that's my choice.

So no, YANBU but I can't see how to change it. There'd be far more people complaining if BBC staff weren't wearing poppies.

MamaG · 30/10/2009 08:23

I jsut snorted coffee through my nose at "oh god the white ones are a pile of shit"

CornishKK · 30/10/2009 08:29

LadyEvenstars - I like the concept of the white poppy, I'm a peace loving hippy but I thought the money raised went to promoting peace whereas red poppy money goes to supporting injured/retired/needy ex-service men? But feel free to correct me!?

I'd probably buy both if I ever saw white ones for sale.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 30/10/2009 08:29

I like the white poppies but who does the money go to? I still want to support the British Legion.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/10/2009 08:34

There was a whole load of weeping and wailing a couple of years ago because BBC News 24 presenters were told not to wear poppies, or something, due to the fact that News 24 is watched the world over and people in other countries would start wondering why presenters were wearing random corsages for a couple of weeks.

Evidently this horrified Daily Express readers.

I agree with Maureen that forced wearing of it debases the meaning somehow. However I completly contradict myself because I am happy that they sell poppies in schools and encourage the wearing of.

What the bloody hell are you wtaching Deal or no Deal for anyway. I have never ever seen the point of that stupid show.

Yes I think you are thinking about this too much MMLove. Its a sign of respect FGS nothing more nothing less.

piscesmoon · 30/10/2009 08:51

I shall wear one nearer the time.
I just don't know why we do everything so early.
The shops were full of Hallowe'en stuff before the schools went back after the summer.
People will put up their Christmas decorations on 1st December and will take them down on 26th and be off to the sales, Christmas over-just as I am starting!
As soon a January hits the Easter eggs will be in the shops.
Why are people wearing a poppy in October?! I will buy one around the 6th Novemember (still almost a week early!)-that is if they are still selling them!!

troutpout · 30/10/2009 08:53

You are thinking about it too much

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/10/2009 08:56

I have never seen or heard of a white poppy.

I have obvsiouly been walking round with blinkers on.

LadyEvenstarsCauldren · 30/10/2009 08:59

GOML they are not widely sold TBH.I wear a white one for peace.

ThingOneofYourNightmares · 30/10/2009 09:03

I hate the enforced public displays too. It's madness. I'd rather it came from the heart. And I too would rather poppies came out this weekend at the earliest. I hate all this festivity-creep. I'd far rather we kept occasions to their real place in the calendar. They have far more impact that way, when you can concentrate the thought. I will buy ours soon but not just yet.

LadyEvenstarsCauldren · 30/10/2009 09:07

The White Poppy symbolises the belief that there are better ways to resolve conflicts than killing strangers.

white poppies

broccolicheesebake · 30/10/2009 09:09

Yep definately thinking about it far too much...

When can showing a mark of respect for those that have given their lives for the country ever be a bad thing
