woman in shop after she asked him what he was dressing up with said
'but that's not a hallowe'en costume'

ds looked a bit crestfallen

I grew up in Canada and we dressed up as anything other than ourselves-one year I was a television!

Does it have to be scary for halloween?

My 3 have a Hallowe'en parade at school tomorrow (today, I suppose!).

Dd1 is going as Captain Jack Sparrow - we made her costume together and once she gets the eyeliner on she looks amazing. She's 9.

Dd2 (5) is letting the side down by going as a witch - a green glittery witch which she wheedled out of her daddy in tesco when I foolishly let dh take her shopping!

Ds (7) is The World's Most Powerful Computer. ?? He found the idea in a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon book, found a big box, decorated it with black pen then painted it all on his own! He wouldn't let anyone help and he won the "best costume" prize at the Beavers' party this week cos he had done it all himself.

You don't have to be scarey for hallowe'en, I don't think.

I prefer to see little ones in cute fancy dress costumes rather than scary ones. I've just dropped DS off at nursery dressed as a wizard (fab outfit from Costco). Most of the boys were dressed as characters and the girls were mainly fairy/princess cute witches. There were a few goulish looking ones mind you.

I am dressing my 11 month old as a bat so I think that you have no worries about dressing your DS as batman. If he is happy with that costume then dont worry what anyone else thinks!

i think they should be allowed to dress up as they want to. It should inspire their imagination and be fun, surely thats what its all about? batmam is ace btw.
ds is 2 and we have the glow in the dark pyjamas with a skeleton on them from gap which i think is the nearest to dressing up he will get tomorrow as so far he just doesn't seem that interested in it, i imagine next year will be different though!

Not unreasonable at all. I grew up in Canada too and I clearly remember being a stick of celery one year! My mother was usually VERY good at making our costumes but obviously this year she wasn't.

Halloween costumes do not have to be scary to be classed as a halloween costume. I'm sure your DS will make a lovely batman!!
