For giving my son RedBull?

PinkPatrick · 28/10/2009 13:37

My son has a competition coming up on Sunday. He needs to be super fit and rearing to go otherwise he's going to get beat up basically!!

He would normally be ok but he hasn't trained for over a month. He went to a pre-comp training session last night and was knackered after the warm up.

Is it really bad if, just this once I let him have a couple of cans of red bull before we go?

He's 11.

don't be daft

how about weetabix, banana etc

way more appropriate

TrillianSlasher · 28/10/2009 13:39

It won't help.

Why has he not trained for a month if he has a competition?

tethersend · 28/10/2009 13:39

Are you having a laugh?

bigchris · 28/10/2009 13:39

why hasnt he trained? Has he been ill?

harleyd · 28/10/2009 13:39

no way he'll get jittery and lose concentration

henryhuggins · 28/10/2009 13:40

certainly you are, it's not really suitable for children.
if he's not up to it, he's not up to it - maybe he can sit this one out?

Goblinchild · 28/10/2009 13:41

Red Bull sends my daughter of 18 ballistic and the effect is almost like amphetamines.

He is likely to lose focus, become hyper, inattentive and possibly aggressive. Drugs are a poor response to lack of training, so I'd say no. let him do his best without the caffeine overload and then use any negative results to underline the need for consistent hard work to achieve results.
I hope this is a wind-up, otherwise you are a poor example of parenting in my opinion

LetThereBeRock · 28/10/2009 13:41

This had to be a windup.

gorionine · 28/10/2009 13:41

what is the next stage, amphetamines?
What sport is it?

tethersend · 28/10/2009 13:42

Mumsnet's position on fruitshoots should give you some idea of how this is going to go down...

I don't think this is real

IdrisTheDragon · 28/10/2009 13:42

Not a good idea.

What sort of competition is it?

LuluDanceOnMyGrave · 28/10/2009 13:43

FFS, if he's in bad shape then he shouldn't be competing! Never mind the whole red bull issue, what if he injures himself? Is this competition REALLY more important than your son's health???

PinkPatrick · 28/10/2009 13:43

no not a wind up, I just assumed it would give him a boost of energy, didn't realise it was so dodgy.

Isn't it just like a strong lucozade drink??

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 28/10/2009 13:45

Banned in some countries. That should tell you enough tbh.

Vile stuff.

tethersend · 28/10/2009 13:45

"Isn't it just like a strong lucozade drink??"

Kind of, in the same way as speed is a strong form of sugar

LaurieScaryCake · 28/10/2009 13:45

no, it has caffeine in it to get the boost, not just sugar like lucozade

Alibooobaandthe40phantoms · 28/10/2009 13:46

No it isn't - Lucozade is just glucose.

Gracie123 · 28/10/2009 13:46

What's the competition?

SerendipitousHarlot · 28/10/2009 13:47

I drink Red Bull almost every day, I justify it because I don't drink coffee.

However, I wouldn't DREAM of giving it to an 11 year old

Caffeine wouldn't do him any good anyway surely? It's not going to help him be better at his sport. And why hasn't he trained for such a long time if he has a competition?

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 28/10/2009 13:47

I feel a bit harsh. If you truly had no idea exactly what red bull is, then I can gently say it is not suitable for children (or adults imo but that's another thread)

DuelingFANGo · 28/10/2009 13:49

Are you the same guy who left his kids in the swimming pool changing room?

PinkPatrick · 28/10/2009 13:50

He hasn't trained for so long as we have been on holiday and the comp kind of crept up on us. Didn't realise it was only a week away until Monday.

I drink a redbull equivilant every day and never feel any different tbh.

It's a mixed martial arts competition.

mmmm wondering if i know you in real -
i know of an 11 yr old boy who is drinking red bull amongst other unsuitable energy drinks , & he is in boxing competitions & his name is Patrick ??
beside the fact that these drinks are very bad for children's teeth , they have caffeine in them .

PinkPatrick · 28/10/2009 13:51

No, Duellingfango

OP posts:
PinkPatrick · 28/10/2009 13:52

Normally he drinks still isotonic drinks. He's not allowed fizzy drinks normally. I just thought they'd give him a bit of energy for one day.
