In thinking 17 degrees is a ridiculous house temp in almost November

Fibilou · 27/10/2009 19:42

DH keeps turning the central heating down from 20 to 17 and opening every window in the house because he "thinks it's hot enough"
I am 6 months pregnant, freezing my tits off and getting increasingly annoyed with his stubborn refusal to accept that 20 is a perfectly reasonable temperature and a profligately ridiculous temperature.
He seems to think that most people have their heating on around 15 degrees !

We have individual thermostats in each room, the minimum temp in the house ATM is 21, it's 23 downstairs BUT I haven't had the heating on today.

I'm comfortable at 21.

nearlybeans · 27/10/2009 21:59

15 degrees in our house, 17 if it's icy. Far too warm to switch it on today. If you're moving about you don't feel it, and if you're sat still there's always a blanket...

To be fair, even in this hardy house, if you have 3 layers on and a pair of warm socks and are still cold, the heating goes on. It probably means we're ill, though

GrendelsMum · 27/10/2009 22:01

Hatwoman and Oldraver - we have individual thermostats on each radiator and a central controller that 'knows' which room should be which temperature at which time, so as you say, the outside temperature doesn't matter.

But actually, we curretnly have our cetnral heating off for building works, and are comfortable at a temperature which according to our thermometer is 15 degrees. 15, I'm happy with. 12, and I'm definitely feeling rather chilly if sitting still.

SofaQueen · 27/10/2009 22:03

Just out of curiosity - those who have the heat set below 15 degrees at night - what do you/did you do about DCs, particularly the very young ones? Seems quite cold, particularly for a young baby.

pollywobbledoodle · 27/10/2009 22:05

generally only put the heating on in the eve (but don't have very young kids)...17-18 is fine for us.

i don't see the point of having the heating on at 17 and OH opening the windows...unless he likes to burn money that is!

pollywobbledoodle · 27/10/2009 22:07

and never put the heating on at night even when dd a baby...prob would have if she had tended to kick all her bedclothes off

Flum · 27/10/2009 22:17

About 18 here.

But haven't had the heating on at all for last few days.

So no heating on and my Boots digital thermometer says 23 degrees C!

rabbit54 · 27/10/2009 22:22

buy an oil radiator. I like it between 18-20 but my DP at 15 so i go into a room and stick the oil rad on and as cosy

snowybun · 28/10/2009 00:06

We tend to set it to 17 then turn down to 15 for overnight. At our previous house it was set to 25 as it was a very cold house. We haven't had the heating on at all yet. The temperature in DD's room is currently registering 21 this house is alot warmer.

ShinyAndNew · 28/10/2009 00:12

Mine is 21 Sometimes on a morning I turn it up to 22.5

I cannot stand being cold.

BloodRedTulips · 28/10/2009 09:44

we haven't bought oil yet but when we do have oil the thermostat is set to 10degrees or lower

heating is never on at night or through the day, just morning and evening to take the chill off

m66 · 28/10/2009 17:06

Mine is set to come on if it goes below 20 which hasn't happened that often. Thermostat is in hall so sometimes lounge is colder and I have to boost temp.

unfitmother · 28/10/2009 17:17

I didn't have a clue what mine was on so just checked and it's 23!
Feels just right to me

AngryFromManchester · 28/10/2009 17:18

ours it at 16
arent I helpful?

eyetunes · 28/10/2009 17:28

20 deg minimum here. often in the depths of winter we have gone to 25, especially if everyone is home. About 22 on average i suppose throughout the winter.

AngryFromManchester · 28/10/2009 17:29

25???

are some of yopur thermostats broken?

(i suppose they could be or maybe mine is....)

fernie3 · 28/10/2009 17:30

mine is at about 20 although it seems to have a mind of its own sometimes it seems boiling other times its freezing?!

2rebecca · 28/10/2009 17:32

Our is usually set at 17. Put another jumper on.

2rebecca · 28/10/2009 17:35

Our heating always goes off at night. When they were babies we had an electric radiator we kept on for the winter baby for the first 3 months. After that they just accepted the house got cool at night.
All my family and husnad's have always turned heating off at night.
SIL put her kids in the wearable sleeping bag things to keep them cozy.
Some folk deserve to have huge fuel bills reading some of this.

jumpjockey · 28/10/2009 17:44

This is the good thing about living in a terrace, even in winter it's never colder than about 16 We have the heating on for a couple of hours in the morning to take the chill off if it's really bad, and a couple of hours in the evening so dd doesn't freeze getting out of the bath, thermostat at 18. I love winter nights snuggled up under an extra blanket!

rabbit54 · 29/10/2009 10:39

My circulation is poorer in the first half of my menstrual cycle than in the second. Once I have ovulated my skin and extremities are much warmer. Also when bleeding i am warmer. I have found that if i exercise then my circulation is good for three days. It's just finding the time to do this. In the first part of my cycle I would like the heating on all the time, but dont do it and stick to oil radiators and keeping moving.

mychildrenarebarmy · 29/10/2009 11:58

Ours is another house where it hasn't been on yet. We have just recently insulated the loft better and had the cavity walls filled. As a result I have been too warm sometimes and have still had to back door open most days. Almost SIL thinks I am taking the mickey when I say that as she is the type of person who will sit there in a jumper mid Summer and say it's cold. When it goes on it will probably be at 16 most of the day and off almost every night unless it is really, really cold.
My Mum takes great pleasure in telling me that when she was a girl they would sometimes wake up with ice on the inside of the windows.
If we go to my in-laws theirs is generally set at 26. And yes, that is actually the temp in the house having checked on their themometer. They insisted on paying to have our central heating system replaced because they decided our house was too cold and it must be because of the old system. It's nice that it is reliable when we do need it now but I can't say we keep the house any warmer.
I did nanny for a family who set theirs at 27 and that was just stupid, the first thing I did every day was turn it down.

Stigaloid · 29/10/2009 12:05

20 is very high - dont worry am sure you will start sweating away soon as pregnancy tends to increase your body temp! Pop on a jumper and eat soup!

madamearcati · 29/10/2009 12:08

We never had heating on at night. That's what bedding is for !!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/10/2009 12:16

Ours is at 18C which suits me when I'm sat down at the computer with a jumper on. (apart from silly hands and feet which are a law unto themselves)

However it is not coming on at the moment as it is 19.6C in here.
