to find Ian Hislop's snotty comments on HIGNFY about mumsnet being 'a website for young mums' who wasted the PM's time asking about biscuits, rather patronising.

whilst i quite agree that it was pretty silly for whoever asked the PM about his favourite biscuits when he came on for the webchat the other day, it still annoyed me that ian hislop (who has clearly never visited mumsnet) focussed only on that one silly question, and made a great point about what a ridiculous waste of the PM's time coming onto a 'young mums' lightweight website was.

I'm not saying the PM's chat was much good - it wasn't - he just trottted out stock soundbites, BUT it is irritating to have a huge community of mostly intelligent debating women written off by smug mr Hislop as a pointless waste of time, purely because one idiot asked the PM about his favourite biscuits.

shame because i usually like Ian and Have I Got News for You.

Young definitely not meant as a compliment.

HouseOfHorrorMum · 25/10/2009 14:17

The biscuit poster was not an idiot, it was a flippant question in that wonderful MN style of mixing serious debate and a laugh. It's a shame that Ian Hislop hadn't researched MN better, it did sound derogatory in saying that we were a young-mums chatroom. Nothing wrong with being young or a mum, but the tone was that it was like a Smash Hits interview asking members of Take That which colour smarties were their favourites

scottishmummy · 25/10/2009 14:18

oh spare me the post feminist interpretation. i was being light hearted

something i recommend you try, if it doesn't compromise your integrity or mimic the male patriarchy and misogyny of humour

Although we probably would ask Take That about their favourite smarties.

HouseOfHorrorMum · 25/10/2009 14:24

Do the orange ones really taste different or is that an urban myth...

scottishmummy · 25/10/2009 14:25

i'll go sit with my sheer hite book.not called S.Hite for nowt

exactly that kind of subjugation to male humour that undermines wimmins issues

ImSoNotTelling · 25/10/2009 14:27

Does anyone know the answer to the smarties question BTW?

I am surprised that anyone would have expected ian hislop to find out about MN before making any comments. Of course he wouldn't. I watched it and was a bit at the level of sneeriness, but then thought, if you read 80% of threads on MN they are about babies toes and names and waters and "Ooh my BF is mean" "My DH is silly" so on balance decided not to get all upset about it.

It did however reinforce the general impression I get that many many things are just clubs for the boys.

cornsilk · 25/10/2009 14:27

Yes they do taste orangy. Red ones aren't made from beetles though.

nae pleasin some folk

cornsilk · 25/10/2009 14:46

Flumpity's back. Want to call anyone else an idiot while you're here?

cornsilk · 25/10/2009 14:51

It was the combination of Ian Hislop and vaginal orgasm in one thread that I found surreal TBH.

MadameDefarge · 25/10/2009 14:56

Doesn't look like flumpity even read the thread. Tsk tsk.

I'm with SM on this one. Who died and made you Queen of What Must Be Discussed on Webchats?

Last time I looked, MN is a parenting website, not a political lobby. Of course it can function as that (pace the MC campaign) because it can engage a diverse range of people behind particular issues...

Taking the piss out of a politician by twitting them on trivia was not invented here.

scottishmummy · 25/10/2009 14:56

LOL quite clever summation.i love mn digressions actually

FuriousGeorge · 25/10/2009 14:58

DH pointed out that it was a very good thing that I was away and missed the GB webchat. He reckons that HIGNFY wouldn't have been able to use any quote from me,as it would be all asterisks.
