Is the leaf blower the laziest invention ever . . .

Or is there something else that's even lazier which I have never seen?

There are two gardeners in the block of flats up the road, blowing all the leaves off the astroturf-green weeny lawn of the communal garden into the street. Then giving them a final blast so that they really fly off and don't come back.

They they will probably come to roost in my front garden, which doesn't bother me all that much as every other leaf, crisp packet and fag end does also, and of course we have our own leaves waiting to fall.

It dawned on me that if I had my own leaf blower, I could launch a counter-attack, blowing back all the leaves they have blown at me, whilst shrilling: "Get a rake and a broom for fucks sake: you are supposed to be gardeners, not blowers!"

If other people in the street cared to join in we could have a battle.

I am starting to like the sound of this. How much are leaf blowers anyway?

But really, is there anything lazier than not being arsed to pick up your own leaves and blowing them into other people's gardens for them to deal with?

Leaf suckers are fab. Extremely good time saving device.
Leaf blowers, I just don't get.(when someone has it set on the blowing function rather than the sucking function).
If you blow the leaves away, they come back the next day, right ?

BalloonSlayer · 23/10/2009 12:45

"If you blow the leaves away, they come back the next day, right ? "

No they don't Oblomov, they come and make themselves comfy in my front garden, or the Shelter for Homeless Leaves, Litter and Other Shite, as it is known in my neighbourhood.

I cleared a little bit today but am waiting for my creeper to do its big performance . . . any day now. . . Anyone remember the bit with the tree shedding leaves in the Monty Python film? Well it's like that.

We use our blower to blow them all into one big pile and then pick them up - is that allowed?!

BalloonSlayer · 23/10/2009 13:22

OOh, I dunno Paolosgirl, we might have to send the leaf police over to do a risk assessment.

How about ready-grated cheese and ready-sliced mushrooms though? Are they in the top ten lazy inventions?

You can buy ready sliced mushrooms?!

BalloonSlayer · 23/10/2009 13:36

Yes!

Weird isn't it?

I wonder if some people hate the texture of the things and can't bear cutting them (I once had to tear up a whole pack of cotton wool for a friend who couldn't bear to tear it and the shop had sold out of the balls ).

But you'd think if you hated the texture of mushrooms you wouldn't bother to eat them. It's not as if they taste of much and the texture is still there.

Ready peeled oranges?
Prewashed lettuce leaves?
No drain tuna?

Longtalljosie · 23/10/2009 14:00

I bought ready-peeled potatoes by mistake (online shopping, didn't look closely enough at the picture) and couldn't believe people didn't peel their own potatoes. Although secretly now I think they're a good idea - don't know if I would be lazy enough to buy them deliberately though

Leafblower was great for FIL - getting on a bit and they live in a house with a fair-sized garden. Cuts out the strenuous work of using a rake, which is handy for him due to medical problems. Composts the leaves afterwards.

Morloth · 23/10/2009 14:11

I like pre-grated cheese and bagged salad, but I have to say I think pre-sliced mushrooms are a step too far, even for me!

I hate the texture of mushrooms but quite like the taste so when making stroganoff or something, I slice them really really thin so that they pretty much dissolve.

No, our toaster which does toast, warms bacon, and either boils or poaches an egg for you all at once is the laziest invention ever.

And brilliant for breakfast sandwiches when running for the train while waiting for the chauffer

"online shopping, didn't look closely enough at the picture"

Yeah right longtalljosie
