To think that Clarks would measure a 16 year old's feet?

DS1 needed some smartish shoes for his new Saturday job so we thought we would go to Clarks first as we were not exactly sure of his size. I was amazed that they would not measure his feet - "We don't offer that service for adults".

His feet have not stopped growing and we genuinely did not know his size. We did buy some (reduced) shoes but it took ages as we went through three half sizes in several styles. If you can't get feet measured in a specialist shoe shop, then where?

Yes I thought so too. DS1 is not a tall 16 year old, looks much younger, and ended up with a size 9. I was very taken aback.

When I worked at Clark's we'd measure anyone's feet regardless of age. How strange. Did you ask why?

they ought to measure anyone;s feet if requested. i worked in clarks for a long time and we always measured adultfeet if people really wanted it done

they are right in a waythough, as adultshoes don't comeinwidths all you need to do is figure out the length, which you ought to know roughly, based on his current pair of shoes

yes French's shoe shop in southampton-dh used to get his shoes there and they measure feet

I did say I was surprised and was told to try some for size. It was 5pm (after school) so I wonder if they were thinking about going home. It was totally self service, apart from the assistant trailing up and down to the stockroom.

LauraIngallsWilder - I measured my own feet with the clarks adult measurer when the lady had gone to get shoes for DS, and confirmed, yes, my feet had gone up a size since having kids. I bet loads of people do this!

Current shoes are a 10 but are DC-style skate shoes, so knew it would be somewhere around there. Would have been good to have a better starting point than that though.

Are French's still there? I used to go and get school shoes there last century (1970s/80s)!

I wish adult shoes did come in different widths as my feet are an H width, and a size 3 or4, so I can get kids shoes sometimes.

I had the same problem with my 13yo ds in the summer. As his feet were a 9 he couldn't be measured, so I went elsewhere.

I had my feet measured by clarks a few months ago. I'm 28. Good job I had my feet measured though; I was wearing size 8's and I was 6.5 in one foot, and a 7 in the other
they sometimes can fob off if they're busy so prob worth going back again.

I can't see why they couldn't make the effort to measure. However, by the age of 16 your DS should be able to tell you whether shoes feel comfortable in length or width, so trying on a few pairs should sort out what is right.

French's are still there - expensive but fablious!

We get DDs shoes there, esp as DD2 needs Ricosta boots or similar to accommodate her insoles. They are very skilled at assessing her size and helping find her the right boots.

They will measure them but you have to ask. I expect they find that a 16yr old doesn't want to be treated like a DC.
