to be sick of pointless, presumptuous questions on forms?

Just a bit of fun, don't take me too seriously, but... forms!

What is it with irrelevent, downright Big Brother-ish questions on forms these days? I've just had yet another form with yet more questions, from my DCs school. Not the sensible, "tell us your contact number so we can contact you if your child breaks a leg" type of question, but the "how do you get your child to school" and "do you consider yourself to have a disability?" type questions.

Why the hell is this their business?!

Likewise my religion, as asked on my DDs non-denominational school's recent form. Whats that all about?

And as for what my ethnic origin is... don't get me started! I'm English, not that it's their business, but how often do you see that as an option?

Come to think of it, my ethnic origin, going by my ancestry, is German, Dutch, English, French, with a smidgeon of Irish in there too. Maybe I should tick all the boxes and make their computer blow up in a paddy!

Madness I'd call rowing, not cool... I'm scared of water! But it was fun for them and for us as we raced them on land via our bikes!

trillian, it really does ask "position in family". Dare I put the farting thing?

mazzystartled · 19/10/2009 23:26

lol at hobbgoblin

you can sometimes see their faces fall as they review their answers

fill it in if you want. or not. it's not compulsory. they can't refuse to let you do baby yoga without it. nor can the school refuse to teach your kids.

hobbgoblin · 19/10/2009 23:27

did you see my thread about the 'why are you late?' form at my DCs school..?

Vallhala · 19/10/2009 23:29

This reminds me - last year DD1 (then 13) was asked to fill in a form at school as to whether she took drugs and whether I did. This was part of a classroom lesson - they called it PCC, can't recall what it means but its part of the curriculum's healthy living mumbo jumbo. I called it Politically Correct Crap, but there you go...

Anyway, darling, darling DD1 ticked yes!

When questioned the little smartass replied, "Yes sir, I do take drugs - I drink tea and caffeine is a drug!".

She also ticked yes to drinking on the grounds that I will allow her a taste of wine on the one in a million occasion that she asks if she may try it!

I can't think where she gets her bloody-mindedness from. Must be my ex-husband.

Why are we talking about Patterdales? My ears pricked up then- I've got one, on my profile...suspect she is a bit border-ish too though.

hobbgoblin · 19/10/2009 23:46

oooh scrumptious BOF! I want one, well me n the DC do, would quite like a lakeland/patterdale cross maybe.

Stayingscarygirl · 19/10/2009 23:52

I used to go to a watercolour painting course, and we had to fill in forms at the beginning and end of each set of classes - to prove that we knew the teacher's name and what we were supposed to be learning, and to show that, as well as teaching us arty stuff, he'd also instructed us on health and safety in the classroom.

I do wonder how many people answer the 'Sex?' question on forms with 'Yes please' or 'Not tonight, I've got a headache!'

My particular gripe is that the dses school doesn't seem to read the forms I send back. Coincidentally, I was sent their Pupil Data Forms to check and return, around the time we moved house - so I changed the address on each form to the new address. Imagine my surprise, months later, to find that they'd posted ds2's report to our old address; and that they'd assessed the boys' eligibility for the school bus based on the old address too. Why did I spend the time correcting and returning the forms if they're not going to take a blind bit of notice of a very obvious amendment to said form!!

{grin}

I thought the title read ".....questions on forums"
Lol

Vallhala · 20/10/2009 00:09

Staying, been there, had that!

There is a teacher at DDs school who insists of beginning emails with "Dear Mrs Smith", because despite having met me many times, knowing I'm a Ms and no longer a Smith and seeing each email I write signed "Jane Jones", he looks no further than my email header, which is in my former surname.

I try to get round it all by saying politely, "Oh, please call me Jane", whilst still courteously calling the staff Mr or Mrs X. Still they don't get it though!

OP posts:
moondog · 20/10/2009 00:28

In which case, why not change your email header?

Vallhala · 20/10/2009 00:35

I could moondog, laziness is my only excuse. I'm not offended just bemused as to why an educated man cannot read my name, which is at the bottom of each email I send or remember my correct name having met me so many times!

I'd be inclined to put it down to deliberate rudeness, but he just doesn't seem the type to act like that.

Plenty of people at our local school ride horses to school.

I had a patterdale as a child. Twas mega lairy. You don't see them often, do you?

frostyfingers · 20/10/2009 09:34

I have to collect info from attendees at courses - name, address, phone and date of birth. We HAVE to ask for the info as a requirement of our funding from the EU - they audit all the paperwork and want that info, god only knows why. I hate asking for dob's particularly, quite often they put in ones which obviously aren't correct, and I turn a blind eye.

ninagleams · 20/10/2009 10:23

"it is a local education authority course, they are interested in the educational objectives."

That sounds grim.

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 20/10/2009 13:04

i once baulked at the what race are you question at the doctors, but it turns out, there's a good reason for asking. to do with cystic fibrosis and sickel cell anaemia. maybe there are reasons for asking, that aren't immediately obvious but are still valid.

moondog · 20/10/2009 18:39

He's probably bemused as to why you don't bother to change your header seeing as it is no longer your name.
What an odd thing to get bemused by, when it is of your making.
