to think that booking a holiday was actually easier before the age of the internet?

You went to the travel agent. You got an armful of brochures. You browsed, you drew circles around the ones you liked the look of, you went back to the travel agent and they booked it for you. Easy peasy.

Lol that should say not sold

thesunshinesbrightly · 19/10/2009 15:22

I agree with OP it's such a headache, i was researching a holiday a few months ago and gave up! i do it next year.

Hulababy · 19/10/2009 15:25

I think it was easier.

However I think it cost us more and we were more limited in our choices.

Problem with the internet is the immense number f choices we have.

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 15:28

I've booked next year's holiday online but only because it wasn't available via a travel agent.

I much prefer going to a travel agent and booking it.There's more of a sense of occasion about it. I even like being that they offer a glass of wine while you're there even though I don't drink. Sad I know.

laughalot · 19/10/2009 15:40

Hey wombat a glass of wine that is fab need to put that to my manager on thursday .

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 15:43

It's good if you like wine. I don't and am offered tea or coffee instead, but I do appreciate the offer anyway. It's a nice touch.

laughalot · 19/10/2009 15:48

Dont think he will let the staff drink it

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 15:49

LOL.Good point. I wouldn't bother then you'll just get jealous.

laughalot · 19/10/2009 15:50

Are you off anywhere nice then wombat ? Im doing turkey next year.

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 15:51

I'd love to see Turkey.

I'm going to Lindos next year for the Rock In Rhodes festival.

laughalot · 19/10/2009 15:52

Lindos is fab have you been ?

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 15:53

No I haven't. It'll be my first time. It looks lovely though. I'm going for the music really but I'm sure that I'll fall in love with Lindos too.

laughalot · 19/10/2009 15:55

The only thing I will say is it gets bloody hot as lindos is very hilly. Its like a little sun trap on the beach. You must go and see rhodes town aswell it is very pretty.

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 15:59

I hate the heat so I'll take extra precautions as I'm prone to heat stroke. I'll make sure to see Rhodes town too, thankyou for the tip.

laughalot · 19/10/2009 16:00

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 16:04

Hope you have a great time.

No I love booking holidays now. I book flights at odd times eg fly out on a Friday and come back a week Wednesday that sort of thing. I book hostels, hotels and campsites online. I can plan my journey better. For example last year at October half term I flew to Bratislava, was able to sort out one night in a hostel there. I had upto date info on train times going across the country, I didn't know where we were going to stay after the first night but ended up in Tatra's where we did loads of mountain walking. DS1 and DS2 (13 and 10) loved the holiday and want to go back. I did something similar when me and boys went to Chamonix in August.Same with numerous other places such as Denmark, Switzerland and Poland.
Internet booking is so much more fun.
I book cottages in Scotland on the very last minute on internet, literally hours before I set off. Feb half term I ended up in a fab cottage near Fife and I didn't book that until 1 hour before we set off. We normally book our ferry crossing for May half term in January and then later pick where we want to go.

Maize · 19/10/2009 16:08

We like package holidays for sunshine because its easier and often cheaper.

We are booked for Rhodes next year and I could not find it cheaper do it separately than the price Thomson gave me. So I chose the hotel after doing lots of online research and then booked it in a Travel agents, really easy and quick and the same price as online.

Always prefer to book in person if I can.

laughalot · 19/10/2009 16:08

out even lol

oldraver · 20/10/2009 15:34

I had a nightmare booking what should of been simple flights for my son online. The pricing structure didnt help, what started off as a '£7.99' flight ended up costing so much more. He was pretty flexible but wanted to go in September when the carrier changed flight times halfway through the month. If he went on the 3rd that waS ok he could get back (had to take into acccount buses from Oxford) but the following week it all the times changed and he wouldn't of been back in time

It was way more stressfull than it should of been. I've sat back and let my Mum got out of booking the next holiday

curiositykilled · 20/10/2009 15:41

Totally disagree. Much quicker, cheaper and easier to find a good holiday now the internet exists. Holiday brochures make me a bit nervous...
