to think MIL should know not to use 'curly' writing?

This isn't a 'biggie', but along the lines of stupid things that dh's & dc's do ...

Dd's school write a letter to a grandparent, asking them what life was like when THEY were young. Grandparent then writes a reply. We chose MIL as the grandparent to be 'honoured' with this task. She has written a lovely reply BUT, she has chosen a font which is so curly, like real handwriting, that I am struggling to make out all the words. dd is 6, and is meant to read the letter out in class. I am going to have to change the font, aren't I, and tactfully ask MIL to use a boring font next time.

Surely, MIL should have thought of this, she does when she writes postcards, or AIBU to expect her to make the letter legible?

I'm surprised you got as far as mumsnet with this. I'm surprised you didn't just ask yourself 'AIBU?' and answer yourself firmly 'Yes IABVU'"

rofl happystory, spot on analysis but start pulling at that thread and the whole of MN unravels...

She used a curly font? Cut off all contact immediately, she is clearly toxic.

ruddynorah · 14/10/2009 20:05

is it wingdings?

YouSaidWHAT · 14/10/2009 21:12

i know what you mean I went to write out an essay recently for my course and chose a curly font and it was so hard to read I gave up. I don't think she would be that upset about changing a font, it's not like your asking her to do something awful is it...

QueenOfFrighteningEveryone · 14/10/2009 21:16

Oh FGS has it not occurred to you that when she went to school, children were probably taught to write in nice curly writing and so she has forgotten that they don't use it anymore?

allaboutme · 14/10/2009 21:43

the curly font using bitch

NanaNina · 15/10/2009 00:05

I have been on a few threads with dils complaining about mils and have tried to give a perspective from being a mil myself BUT this one beggars belief............totally...........but it's really heartening to hear so many of your comments and the witty ones are great. God help this MIL!

VengefulSinner · 15/10/2009 10:53

YABU. She has gone out of her way to do a task that you 'honoured' her with. In addition, are children not taught 'curly' writing these days anyway? I know that DS (5) comes home with letters to learn that are complete script writing whereas I had always taught him block letters. Oce you read it once or twice it should not be that difficult to decipher.

OMG! Another thing to put on my list of things not to do when I am a MIL.

"Do not send emails to dgc in a curly font!"

diddl · 15/10/2009 11:41

My MIL can´t email, so I´ll never have to worry about curly fonts [smug]

kickassangel · 16/10/2009 15:46

gosh, i skip mn for a day & come back to find this.

actually, i relaised later that this prob has more to do with me being a frustrated teacher unable to wrk (due to visa restrictions). i was just thinking ANY worksheet for a young child HAS to be legible - you get really picked up on it in teacher training. then i realsied that, of course, mil wouldn't be thinking like that.

btw, it just happens it was mil who did the letter, i would say the same if it was dsis, my mum, or anyone.

i think i spent too many years teaching Purpose, Form, Audience and Content in my literacy classes, and am now struggling to leave it all behind me. you can take the girl out of teaching, ....
