to get rid of the toys that really piss me off, even if DD still plays with them?

E.g. Fuzzy Felt. It is the bane of my life. I always seem to have a bit of bloody fuzzy felt stuck to me, every corner of the house seems to be full of the damn stuff, and DD just seems to get it all out of the box, spread it round the main walkways and then go off to play with something else. Grrrr!

Same can be said of many other of DDs toys, which all seem to be minute, totally unsafe for nearly crawling DS, and surprisingly adhesive to clothes!!!!!

AIBU to just surreptitiously rid the house of them? Maybe DD won't even notice !

Has no-one mentioned sticklebricks? Now those do hurt when you stand on them with bare feet!

BettyTurnip · 13/10/2009 22:38

I break out in a cold sweat at night sometimes when think of how much money has been spent over the years on utter crap gifts such as all those already mentioned. Our dds could probably be funded through private school and university with the equivalent of what MIL alone has spent

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 13/10/2009 23:41

I too am a moonsand hater. DS got some for last xmas when he was 2 and a half and it promptly got spread around the entire house. My lovely chocolate coloured sofa was orange for quite some time, it was in our beds, on windows, in the loo... it drove me INSANE.

NEVER let this stuff into your home, you will be hoovering until doomsday...

fabhead · 14/10/2009 00:20

AGREE about that moonsand shit, but also those F*CKING books with jigsaw bits in them. What a dumb idea, apologies if has been mentioned before but why!! After the first time you pop out the bits they never stay in again so you get frustrated kids doing the jigsaws, turning the page to do the next ones and all the bits fall out. Same thing when you try and put them away. Only things I have ever hidden.

Do like playmobil though - I gave ds a large plastic box that it all stays in and he takes out the big things toplay with and most of the little fiddly bits stay in the bottom (although I was going through the hoover bag the other day looking for a ridiculously small pirate coin ....)

dreamteamgirl · 14/10/2009 00:27

See now, I have to admit to loving playdoh & plastecine (Thats spelt wrong but can't figure out how to spell it right) as does DS,

The main toy I loathe loathe LOATHE is his freakin sandpit.

'Mummy can i go in my sand pit?'

'NO'

'Whyyyyyyyyyyy?'

(thinks) 'Cos its the worst thing ever invented and the thought of clearing up after it, and emptying your socks and sweeping the patio and the lounge floor and inevistably some how changing my bed makes me want to scream and kill someone' although what I say is 'Oooh its abit late for sandpits really isnt it? Lets get some transformers/ lego. playdoh/ power rangers out?'

Transformers are very annoying, I can transform them ok, but they constantly fall to pieces [grr]

MissM · 14/10/2009 08:51

Bloody sticklebricks for the same reasons as lego. The stuff honestly seems to breed - every time I think I've cleared it all away another piece appears where I've just tidied.

The trouble with 'losing' evil toys is that my DCs have a habit of asking for them about 6 months later, having not mentioned them for ages.

Circus · 14/10/2009 08:55

The so-called toy I have hated most was a pink talking wand from M&S. It wasn't so much the ridiculous amount of batteries it needed, the ghastly voice and the overload of pink and purple plastic, it was the sheer weight and sharpness of the edges. Forget toy - think weapon - medieval mace comes to mind. In the best interests of her little brother, DD is to this day puzzled as to where it has gone. And occasionally has a meltdown in M&S if she sees replacement wands which mummy isn't going to buy. Hideous. And it beats the unbelievably boring Hungry Caterpillar game well into second place.

ArghhhhmazingBouncingSpider · 14/10/2009 08:58

I dont think Im allowed to hate any toys, im sure its written into my work contract somewhere and I would be sacked at the mere mention of how crap Moonsand, playdoh, glitter, Transformers, ben 10, and anything in a horrible washed out pink colour is.

MrsBadger · 14/10/2009 09:05

I have a very limited take on playdough
we make it
we play with it immediately
we put it in a tub in he fridge
we forget abotu it
we bin it the following week when we need the tub for somethign else

but yes yes to batteries - DH and I had a private celebration a few weeks ago when Charlie Mouse (of Bagpuss fame) finally ran down.

and Playmobil is currently all secondhand so someone else has lost all the tiny bits already

alana39 · 14/10/2009 09:51

Oh sticklebricks are much worse than lego. You can't even make anything good with them and they get all bent.

Playmobil is the best thing ever for kids in terms of detail, but I am completely sick of hoovering up pirates' treasure (coins about 3mm across ffs).

And this probably makes me a terrible mother but in 6 years we have never had paint or playdough in the house. They do it at toddler groups, playschool, school, where they have more sensible flooring and professional cleaners.

My DCs never notice the things that have been culled - am hoping this will extend to the entre series of 3rd and Bird that I accidentally deleted from the digibox yesterday when DS2 notices....

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/10/2009 10:03

We have a mysterious box that never arrived in our shopping from Thailand. Contained in this box was Polly piddling pocket, many many soft toys, a huge giraffe etc etc. It is of mythical proportion given the ammount of stuff it holds. The majority of dd's plastic tut went to an orphanage, the rest to friends of hers without her knowledge.
Currently I am battling the fight of the littlest petshop. She is 8.5 ffs, she doesn't need to twat about with ickle bunny wabbits (you have to do her friend's nauseating voice whenyou talk about it).
DD thinks I am being very unreasonable to suggest that her friends give her book tokens for her birthday rather than random bit of crap.

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 14/10/2009 10:06

Oh I hate polly pocket - children can never get the clothes on and off themselves, and then when they try the clothes end up splitting. And you can never find the other boot. And I end up getting envious of the outfits of a stupid plastic doll!!

Walkingwiththighosaurs · 14/10/2009 10:20

Definitely Lego. DS has asked for more for Christmas I have asked him where it will go when it is built, he shrugged and said I don't know (don't care more like). Lego is not like it used to be when I was little, you didn't get "sets" like Star Wars, it just consisted of lots of white bricks, with a few windows thrown in and some red and green bricks to make it a bit more interesting. About the only thing you could build was a house! I long for the day when DS does not want toys anymore, then I feel sad that I am wishing his life away.

BadPoet · 14/10/2009 10:27

'Educational' Orchards Toys board games. NEVER played with. Taken out of box and spread around many, many times. My dh suggested getting another this Christmas!

The Tinkerbell Fairy Garden game! It's like the instructions were written by someone while they were pissed. Every single sodding tiny different coloured bead has a different thing you have to do to get it.

Bath crayons - easily washable - comes off bath & tiles! Well yes, eventually, with a LOT of scrubbing. But they never, ever come off grout.

We've never had moonsand

Salemchocolates · 14/10/2009 10:30

No one has mentioned Pokemon and other types of card games. They really are the bane of my life. They're everywhere and have taken over my house. Never mind lego or polly pocket

Walkingwiththighosaurs · 14/10/2009 10:36

We have Pokemon cards too

BigusBumus · 14/10/2009 10:56

But no one agrees with me about Go-gos??? I can't belive that!!

sagan · 14/10/2009 11:02

As much as I adore dd's Sylvanians I wish they din't come with quite so many bloody bits. 'Over 200 pieces' the stupid thing said on the box, I really should know better

stealthsquiggle · 14/10/2009 11:03

Never heard of them, Bigus - and long may it stay that way.

Fortunately my DS is quite susceptible to brainwashing persuasion, and I have (a) blocked all Cartoon Network and associated/similar channels and (b) always told him that anything advertised on TV is, by definition, plastic rubbish and a waste of money - so the worst we have are Top Trumps, which do generally get put back in their boxes.

alana39 · 14/10/2009 11:09

Yes yes Bigus DH is fond of giving Go-gos as rewards when he's been out on his own with the DCs. Nice idea, they're cheap - and they bloody argue about which ones belong to which boy for months afterwards. They don't do anything and just get carried around. Have started calling them dolls which is putting DS1 off a bit.

pranma · 14/10/2009 11:13

My dgd is 10 and loves 'littlest pet shop'so much better imho than loving make up,hair extensions and Miley Cyrus. She does like HSM and HM as well but I think its great that she still wants to play with toys.long may it last.

bunjies · 14/10/2009 11:26

Oh no. I wish I'd read this thread before buying the Moon Sand Fairies kit for dd. She is 7 though, will this make a difference? Please say it will....

tinkbig · 14/10/2009 12:00

Swangirl · 14/10/2009 12:06

My DD used to have Alphabet pal.
It was so annoying www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBVupntfKH0&feature=related It went to the charity shop. I hate that toy

stealthsquiggle · 14/10/2009 12:21

swangirl we had to issue an official pardon to alphabet pal - DS got such a flying start through knowing the alphabet - and it was all down to alphabet pal

Also - he's worth keeping just for the adult party game of seeing how many rude words he knows. If you try to make him sound out a rude word (that he knows) he giggles and says "ooh that tickles" to get out of it - it's fab !
