Ok, I so know I am not being unreasonable, but I wanted to put this where a lot of mum's/carers would see it.

These are apparently part of a new game being played in school playgrounds.

The girls wear the bands and if a boy breaks it off her, then she has to perform a sexual act, rangeing from hugging the boy to full intercourse.

My ex-charge told me about these things at the weekend and I have told her parents and thought I would post this here to warn others. She is 10 years old, she didn't want to play and so didn't have any bands but then her friends would not talk to her. She was really upset, I am sooo glad that she thought she could come to me!

I googled them and there have been stories in a couple of newspapers (not particularly popular papers on MN!).

I do know that as soon as these have been banned there will be another "game" in the playground but wanted to warn people of these awful things.

This is concerning, but not new - at least 15-20 years old!

This is a storm in a teacup no? And, umm...bracelets can't make children have sex. That may be about the stupidest thing I've read in a long while.

This sounds like a variation on kisschase to me.

iateallthecreameggsyummy · 30/09/2009 09:18

we had these when i was at school, nothing to worry about.

LollipopViolet · 30/09/2009 09:32

Gah, these were around when I was in school (2001-2006 at high school). No one ever broke them, but I did hear about that. People I knew just wore them as bracelets.

willali · 30/09/2009 12:33

HOw refreshing to see an outbreak of common sense on MN!!

They are just bracelets at my DS school worn by boys and girls* and although they are aware of the "consequences" this just makes them a bit edgy IYSWIM and they are under no illusions that this is what will actually happen or that there will be any pressure to actually do it! It'll die a natural death before Xmas mark my words....

*until they are confiscated!!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/09/2009 12:38

I remember this from when I was at school, what I cant remember though is anyone actually having sex because someone snapped their band, more likely get a mouthful of abuse for breaking the bracelet that you'd spent your hard earned pocket money on!

KnickersandVests · 30/09/2009 12:41

I asked DD about these the other day as I'd bought her some and then read about them being called shagbands on here and what, apparently, they were all about and she didn't even know what they were called so she asked her friend(two years older, more savvy) she didn't know either.

This is all rubbish, I know, DD told me.

troutpout · 30/09/2009 12:49

boys wear them too

slushy06 · 30/09/2009 16:07

We had these when I was at school and yes boys or girls snapped them If I remember correctly yellows and greens were friendship pink and reds were kisses and black and purple were the s**g bands I saw many snapped even blacks it usually meant we stood around giggling about the fact that black meant sex. Or that so and so wanted to go out with so and so to my knowledge no acts were ever performed as a result of these bands and it was mostly a silly game. They are just doing the rounds again in 10 years they will probably go round again. I would not worry.

misdee · 30/09/2009 16:13

saw an article about these yestetrday and laughed.

these were about when i was at school, way back in the early 90's.

yes thebands have 'meanings' but no-one ever acted on them. it was just a laugh.

nmy dd's havent asked fro them yet, the fad hasnt hit our area yet.

FimboFortunaFeet · 30/09/2009 16:22

My dd has them, didn't realise they were called that though. I don't allow her to wear them to school. Will ask her later about it.
