to carry a pomander when travelling by public transport?

I was verbally abused this afternoon on the train by a very rude old man who seemed to take it personally that I was using a pomander

I know it's a bit unfashionable (don't know why though!) but the way I see it is why the hell shouldn't I take whatever measures I deem appropriate to protect myself from discomfort?

If people observed proper personal hygiene (nothing obsessive here, I just mean not actually smelling bad and making other people feel unwell) and stayed off the buses and trains when they have hacking coughs and sneezes etc, I wouldn't use it

but I travel a lot and just want to be comfortable - why he was so rude I don't understand

he called me a "cow"

Queen Elizabeth I carried one about so she couldn't smell her own pants. IMHO a stuffed orange is way more pleasant than some smelly old tramp commuter.

You'll have to excuse the confusion but I managed to skip some of the detail and wonder quite how much more pleasant it'd be to have an orange in your pants. Given that the alternative was a smelly old gent.

I prefer to have a beautiful re-ruffed choir boy preceeding me swinging a censer.

Kemble, that is exactly what I meant. It certainly makes smelly people stay out of my way on the commute.

This was brilliant and I loved the name, conjoured up image of cat's arse mouth and bad perm for some reason.

I would have given my right foot for a pomander on the bus today some STUNK of b-o and I think someone else (no kids on board) had poo'd themselves

I got really into scent lockets when I was pregnant and certain smells made me nauseous. A little lemon oil in them really helped me out.

What a fantastic thread. I have a vision of MNers on trains all clutching pomanders and wielding them at unwashed riffraff.
