to expect the Police to do something about a crime that we have solved for them?

DP had his bike stolen a few weeks ago. The police told him they would come round and interview him and take a statement, but they didn't turn up. I was not surprised by this at all, as the same thing happened a while back when I had my bag stolen. DP is not very proactive so didn't chase the police up, but sorted out the insurance claim which has now been paid. DP was looking on ebay to find the parts to replace his bike (as he hadn't received the full value of the bike in the payout), and he found that a seller on ebay was selling all the different (rare)bits of his bike (which he had originally bought separately and which he had itemised on his insurance claim). The seller is based nearby to us and has given the option of a pick up. DP phoned the police immediately and put through to a police woman who said someone would visit us in a few days. When DP pointed out that the auction finished in 36 hours she said that someone would come round at about 6pm to speak to us. DP offered to email the ebay link but was told by the police woman that she wasn't very good with technology so it was best to wait for the visit!
We waited all evening. We phoned at 8pm and was told that someone was on their way, but noone arrived. We phoned again this morning and were told that someone would get back to us sometime today!!
AIBU to think that the police should be a bit more bloody proactive! We have information that COULD lead to them preventing further crimes, and cracking down on just the sort of anti-social behaviour that the government keep banging on about. What makes me even more annoyed is that my friend who lives a few streets away had a spot visit from the police a few days ago to discuss any issues she might have. However they do not have the resources to deal with an ACTUAL crime.

I know someone this happened to, they saw their stolen watch on ebay. Rang police who went round and busted the bloke's house and found loads more stuff that had been nicked from oter peoples' houses. They should do something.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. We had £250 taken out of our bank account, to the Tower Hamlets Bangladeshi Association. It came out a few days after we'd ordered a takeaway from a restaurant we'd never used before. When my husband went to the police station to get a crime number, he pointed out the link and they LAUGHED at him.

I think I might be a police basher. But don't tell anyone. I might get arrested.

verytiredmummy.

The problem is as well that one bad experience can wipe out all faith in an organisation. Which is tough on the organisations but still.

Sorry have confused things by changing name mid-thread (am OP mumofeve!).
There has been a development....dum dum durrrm!
DP has chased police up again and apparently they are now on the case! Despite the fact that they couldn't find the ebay sellers items initially (they wrote the username down wrong ), they have flagged up the issue with ebay and are apparently going to try to 'nick' the guy tonight (yes - they actually used the term 'nick'!).
I am a bit confused about this sudden about face - do you think they have been on MN (SOCD this hasn't got anything to do with you has it !!!!)?
We shall see what happens. DP is very excited and seems to be auditioning for an extra in the Bill !

There are often reviews of outstanding logs and this one has probably been spotted by a supervisor who has rightly kicked some people up the bum! Hope there is some successful collar feeling when they do the drum .

just worth saying that even though it sometimes LOOKS as though the police are not doing anything they may actually be working very hard behind the scenes but not got around to letting you know the outcome etc because they are so strapped for resources etc. im a special and i can see that sometimes its impossible to get back to someone straight away.

just the other day i witnessed a horrific assault while i was doing the day job - rang it in and heard nowt back at all - but i rang them back a few days later to be told someone would be out to take a statement and the police had arrested the persons who committed the assault. i just didnt hear back but i can understand from the other side as when im working as a special i can see how difficult it is to please everyone!

Sorry Shiney, didn't mean to pee on your bonfire! The Power of Mumsnet is indeed a far more plausible explanation .

I agree, ask for a crime no.
Also, if it is your DP's, it will probably still have his fingerprints on it.

HateTheHoover · 25/09/2009 20:17

Oh dear, I'm afraid I have to hang my head in shame at my hasty criticism of the boys (and girls) in blue. A very handsome policeman called by tonight to take a statement from DP. They will be questioning the 'suspect' as soon as they get his details from the powers-that-be at ebay. DP is giddy with the excitement of it all. I'm just a bit pissed off that the police officer turned up just before bathtime, so I had to deal with DD's hairwashing. There's no pleasing some people !

edam · 25/09/2009 20:23

hurrah, glad they are finally taking an interest. Let's hope they actually DO something before the bike parts are sold on and out of the thief's hands...

hoover hurrah! Glad something is being do ne for you.
Me and DH were victims of 2 quite different crimes and the police did practically nothing.

I bought tickets off ebay, sent a cheque and funnily enough no tickets ever arrived. I take responsibility for being a numpty and not checking feedback but I reported it to the cops. I thought it would be fairly easy to track down the offender, after all I sent it to an address and the cheque was paid into a bank account. An officer spoke to me and I did a statement( did it myself and sent it to her as I'm kind of in the business and know how to do statements) but I never heard anything after that at all.

DH was assaulted. He picked out his assailant from a book of photos so assumed he would probably have to go in for more ID procedures, but not a word was heard after the photo book session. DH was never even asked to do a statement so I know that means nothing more was done.

Pretty poor I think.

Glad you are getting somewhere though. Kind of restores a bit of faith in the fuzz.
