To be annoyed that school is giving away stuff!

Was staggered when collecting DS from primary school to see some stuff laid out on the ground, with a notice offering us the opportunity to help ourselves - included about 20 wooden hockey sticks (looked old and a bit battered, but useable) and 2 large "connect 4" games! Why on earth is the school giving it away??

Whyever not?

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 23/09/2009 15:38

Maybe they have new stuff and don't need to keep the older tattier stuff

rubyslippers · 23/09/2009 15:38

what;s the problem?

Knickers0nmahead · 23/09/2009 15:40

And why are you angry about it?

Did you want fisrt choice or something?

FimboFortuna · 23/09/2009 15:42

Is the connect 4, the huge ones for playing outdoors with? If so they could have asked for a donation for them, but old battered hockey sticks - nope don't see the problem at all. Don't get why you are angry tbh.

leftangle · 23/09/2009 15:43

Better than putting it in the tip - or leaving it in a cupboard for the next 10 years.

famishedass · 23/09/2009 15:53

Again, what's the problem?

notgettinganyyounger · 23/09/2009 15:55

nothing wrong with that. It has obviously been replaced and they want someone else to benefit.

piscesmoon · 23/09/2009 15:56

I don't see a problem-they didn't want it-someone else might.

alwayslookingforanswers · 23/09/2009 15:57

no don't see a problem either.

Infant school next door had a clear out of the summer holidays last year and had a skip just inside the staff car park when the children went back. We all got letters home telling us if there was anything we wanted from it to take it - would be gone after X date.

Mmmmcoffee · 23/09/2009 15:58

No problem with it - our school gave away about 30 little plastic chairs that were old and tatty because they'd bought new ones. Maybe they should have popped a 'donation' box out in plain sight, but maybe they just wanted rid of the stuff ASAP.

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 23/09/2009 16:09

Both hockey sticks and connect 4 game, are things the school may have replaced using the Sainsburys Active Kids / Tesco sports vouchers. So if the OP is concerned the school has spent money out on new items when they already have them, it may be that the vouchers have paid for the items. As other posters have commented, yes a donation box may have been nice, but maybe they wanted shot of them quickly.

englishpatient · 23/09/2009 18:03

I'm obviously being unreasonable then! It just seemed surprising when I am often hearing that the school needs more money.

I suppose they probably had obtained replacements using Sainsbury vouchers, but couldn't they either donate the old stuff to somewhere that needs it or sell it?

The kids from the school mostly have parents who would have no problem buying this sort of thing for them. A donation box would have been a good idea, mmmmcoffee.

Maybe they are thinking that it might go to some mother and toddler groups that the parents know of. Either way...it's getting another use by going to someone who would want it.
Can't see a problem at all

dogonpoints · 23/09/2009 18:19

The thing is, the school needs more money for particular items. They probably have a new load of hockey sticks, bought with money that could only be used for sports equipment. Sound slike they got playground games too.

You are being ridiculously judgey.
