AIBU?

To be irrationally annoyed by women putting their make up on on trains?!

There is a woman who gets the same train as me in the mornings and every day she spends half an hour gazing into her mirror applying her make up and generally having a good look at herself. I find it incredibly annoying but I'm not sure quite why ... I just find grooming like this in public quite off-putting.

I mean, I know that it can be a huge rush in the morning to get out the door and I for one have certainly left the house with a naked face in my time but I then go to the loo at work and sort myself out. I wouldn't dream of doing it in front of a carriage load of onlookers and certainly not as daily ritual.

Anyone else feel like this or am I alone in my irrational pet hate??

YABU in general but the half hour might well start to bug me even though I have been known to put make up on in the car and on the train (and on planes, come to that) Why - because it is not important to me and I couldn't care less about leaving the house without make up but there is a certain expectation of wearing makeup to meetings, etc - so I do it wherever/whenever I have time.

Can't you change carriages or something if it annoys you that much?

Yes, yes you're right - applying a dab of lipgloss is EXACTLY like having a shit in the gangway.

YABcompletelyU. I used to have a 2 hours commute to work (each way). And I had the choice between sleeping an extra 10 minutes (which matters a lot when you get up at 5.45), spending 10 extra minutes with my DD whom I hardly saw at the time or do my make up. Funny enough cuddles with DD always won. Don't care if that annoys you, but my DD is more important. If you don't like it, don't look. And no I couldn't do it at work because I could not spare the 10 minutes when I was there as I was busy working flat out so that I could leave on time, catch my train and see DD before she went to bed

I don't really mind people putting make up on - I think it's a slightly odd choice and I wouldn't generally do it, but it's sort of fair enough.

Like many things, I didn't know this annoyed me until reading a thread about it on MN. But now you mention it, yes it is very odd.

I used to do my make-up on the tube on the way to work every day. Only if I got a seat though, don't think it would be particularly practical standing up.

Much nicer to have the extra time in bed and isn't affecting anyone else.

YANBU, it bugs me and I'm not sure why either. Although equally mesmorising and interesting to note they often look worse afterwards.

What I really hate though is people brushing / combing their hair sitting next to you. UGH. stray hairs and bits of scalp flying towards you. Makes me feel quite sick.

yabcompletelyu, why is it "odd"??

If I was able to get the train to work and have some time to myself I'd probably do it too. Anything that cuts the horrible scramble at home in the morning down a bit.

I have an ongoing sleep problem characterised by waking at 3-5 am and then taking over an hour+ to drop back off again so anything that would afford me an extra few minutes in bed would be worth it as the only time I seem to be able to ctach up a bit is in the morning.

It's hardly shouting on your mobile/having an ipod at full volume is it??

And whoever said it's intrusive. eh? Of course it's not!

I'm impressed anyone gets it together enough to wear make up every day, no matter how they do it.

I barely bother to dry my hair before work in the mornings, as it's usually dry by the time I get there.

I don't mind someone putting on a dab of lippy or checking their nose in a mirror for shininess. It s when they do the full start-to-finish foundation, concealer (working on their red spotty bits) etc etc. LIke you don't exist. Can t they pop to the loo on the train?

It s like the difference between someone eating an icecream in the street, and walking along munching a burger and chips. One is acceptable public behaviour, the other is gross. But where you draw the line depends on yr manners and sense of public decency.

You're a bit of an arse yourself stillstanding.

Now women who don't wear make up at all and leave their rank spots on display for everyone else to look at all day.

I'd never use a loo on a train to apply make up - they are always ankle deep in piss.

Yes, bang ... can see we are definitely not on the same page.

Women really do need to cover up. Shameful otherwise.

I just think on all these things: we are a crowded island (esp London), we have to try to get along, we should try to make sure our public behaviour (noise, phone calls, eating, personal hygiene, repulsive private habits) infringes on others as little as possible.

Being less selfish is the only way to minimise stress and rage, especially on awful commutes. If that means getting up five minutes early to squeeze yr spots and pluck yr eyebrows in the privacy of yr own bathroom so be it.

It's not remotely like eating smelly food or pooing in public and I don't see how anyone could equate the two. (And if you do, I'd like to see what sort of make-up you're putting on!)

I do it if I'm running late, with no qualms. I actually find it more irritating when women put their make-up on in the loos at work. Makes me feel very self-conscious about the, er, audio of my loo visit.

Anniemac - don't be late then, get up earlier.

I can think of more annoying train habits. Like Ipods turned up so loud the whole carriage can hear them.
Or people who get on the train totally pissed up and stinking of booze.
Or people who fall asleep with their mouths open dribbling and snoring.
Compared to that just putting a bit of slap on your face is quite mild.

Not so much make-up but there is a lady who clearly rolls out of bed, packs a bag, and gets on the train. Then has breakfast, cleanses/tones/moisturises, has coffee which she makes up using flask/plastic pot of coffee then does full face of slap - in between each activity she sanitises hands with one of those wee bottles of gel. It is not the general principle but the fannying about that this particular woman gets up to lots of rumaging in bag and clicking things open and shut. She is also spread all over the bloody table. I am sure it must take her as long pack all her necessary crap into her bag as it would to do it in the house.

Oh and I spend £3k a year on my bloody season ticket, I think that almost entitles me to shit in the gangway and definitely to use my time to do things that are convenient for me!
