to, like, think that people should, like, be able to like, say a whole, like, sentence without the word 'like'?

'Tis that time of year again when the students return to university in my fair city, the roads to and from the city centre become mysteriously clogged with traffic and buses are overloaded.

Spent forty minutes on a bus hearing the girl in the seat behind me, like, talking about how some of her, like friends had caught, like Swine Flu, and like, how they said it was like, just like normal flu, and how she like, asked them how they, like, knew they had, like Swine flu and not just kind of like, normal flu, blah, blah, like, blah

I think I lost the will to live at one point.

Sorry, moan over.

It's bad isn't it lol

Squishabelle · 22/09/2009 15:12

So annoying.

pagwatch · 22/09/2009 15:14

you are just like soooooo lame and so like really old yeah

StableButDeluded · 22/09/2009 15:18

I know pagwatch, I always swore I would never turn into my mother, and would always be, hip, cool and trendy and 'down with the kids'. But I am lame, and my very usage of the words 'hip' and 'trendy (not to mention 'down with the kids') merely confirms it.

SecretNinjaChipmunk · 22/09/2009 15:19

you just need to like chillax yeah?

pagwatch · 22/09/2009 15:19

Well I think you're groovy

StableButDeluded · 22/09/2009 15:20

My 17 year old niece had to explain to me what an Emo was the other day.

StableButDeluded · 22/09/2009 15:28

'Chillax' arrrgghh!

Oops, sorry, slipped into old woman mode again there. Ahem.

SecretNinjaChipmunk · 22/09/2009 15:30

chillax is one of the most horrible words i know. what a load of utter tripe. like.

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/09/2009 16:03

I knew I'd turned into my mother when I looked at a fashionably dressed twentysomething and thought she needed to wrap up warmer in this weather. See, these young'uns don't even need to open their mouths to make me feel old .

twirlymum · 22/09/2009 16:08

Not as bad as the Aussie type of inflection so that every sentence sounds like a sentence.
And trousers round bums with pants showing. One day, I will grab someone and hoik their trousers up so high they'll be singing soprano forevermore......

twirlymum · 22/09/2009 16:08

Sorry, meant to say every sentence sounds like a question.

duchesse · 22/09/2009 16:25

I find myself tuning out when my 14 yr old launches into an explanation about anything. he thinks I'm like, well mean, and I, like, never listen to a word she sez. I'm like talk to the hand luv cos the ear aint listenin.

clam · 22/09/2009 16:35

We play a game with our kids called the yes/no game where they have to answer a series of questions without using the words yes or no. They're well-practised by now and there's no catching them out. However, recently we changed the rules to them having to explain something in detail without using 'like' and 'you know.' Hopeless. I thought we had two articulate kids, but they were bloody awful at it.

clam · 22/09/2009 16:37

Erm.... what is an emo?

yellowvan · 22/09/2009 16:38

Heard a linguist talking about this on R4 once, apparently its a unique part of speech, not quite a hesitation or tic,nor a comparison but sort of for organising yr thoughts. wish i could remember. it sounded, like, convincing at the time

StableButDeluded · 22/09/2009 16:39

at duchesse. I do quite like 'talk to the hand' but I haven't got the attitude to carry it off. I can't 'do' sassy

OP posts:
Pikelit · 22/09/2009 16:44

Like I still don't actually know what an emo is...

OrmIrian · 22/09/2009 16:45

I think it's an updated version of 'errr' isn't it.

But yes..... incredibly annoying.

MaryMungo · 22/09/2009 17:00

I always thought that the use of the word "like" as a hedging word was the ultimate evidence of an ingrained lack of personal responsibility and low self esteem resulting in the inability to commit to the idea that your opinion is actually your opinion and not just something like your opinion.

But, like, that's just me.

GibbonInARibbon · 22/09/2009 17:03

Yellowvan, you heard it too!

It was very interesting but alas, I cannot remember enough to explain it well.

I do recall it being a unique part of speech and there is no other word that can be used in the same way...God I wish I could remember more, memory like a fish these days.

StableButDeluded · 22/09/2009 17:05

Well I'm still not sure I've understood it correctly, but Emo is short for 'emotional'. They wear grungy clothes and listen to a particular type of music, but they're not quite the same as Goths. Not quite as 'dark'.Something like that anyway [hmmm]

StableButDeluded · 22/09/2009 17:06

or even

My 16 year old niece starts every sentence with 'oh my god' and uses the word 'totally' all the time too.
