to want to hold my baby when he is NOT pissed off about something?

Just that, really. DS is about 4 weeks now. Family and visitors all want their cuddles when he is alert, freshly changed, has a full tummy (but is out of danger of puking), not sleeping, not breastfeeding and not crying. As all parents of newborns know, this probably accounts for about 5 minutes out of every hour.

As soon as he begins to cry, belch, puke, crap, root, or go to sleep with dribbly extras, it's "Ohhhhh, I think someone wants their Mummy!" and I get presented with Mr Furious while everyone else has a nice chat and a cuppa. An hour later after I've breastfed, cleaned up posset, changed nappy and maybe an outfit too, some scumbag welcome guest says "I'm ready for MY baby cuddles now" and then promptly announces "Oh look! He's smiling at me, I must have the magic touch!" Or my particular favourite, "They can tell whether you're stressed or relaxed, can't they?" as I sit in the corner smelling of boob cheese and trying to remain upright after 6 weeks of no sleep.

I decided to give him a lovely bath yesterday with DD while we had some time to ourselves, and he shat in it, and he was sitting and crying until he puked in the poo soup and DD was shrieking at the sight, and then my sister-in-law rang to negotiate an outing for Sunday dinner, and DH tried to give me the phone for me to make arrangements. I don't think so

This is not my first and I know it gets better! Please rant with me and help me to keep a sense of humour about it.

After having lunch with the in laws, where DS (3 months) was a cranky boy until just before they arrived, wonderful and smiley while they were here, and then back to total crank after they left, I'm right there with you!

And laughing my ass off at the description of the bath! Because tonight, I lifted DS out of the tub and he promptly peed all over me.

LOL at this thread! Hope it's cheered you up a bit screwcap!!

The OP made me laugh so much !!!

My MIL, for some stupidly unknown reason always looked at my DS's lips and then proceeded to tell me in her really fucking annoying "I know EVERYTHING" way that he had wind, then she'd start pounding his little back !!!

ChunkyMonkeysMum · 21/09/2009 20:41

Oops, strike-outs don't work with speech marks !!

pigletmania · 21/09/2009 20:42

I know the feeling well smallscrewcap. Your post certainly did make me laugh.

@ "Bin Laden".

My rule of thumb is under 12 weeks, wind. Over 12 weeks, teeth. Either way, sod all you can do about it, except grin and bear it!

Yes, I think we will visit other people when the twins are born rather than have visitors... That way they get to clean up after all of us and feed/make tea for us whilst I sit smugly with babies...

ThePinkOne · 21/09/2009 21:11

My step-mum always insisted on jiggling DD when actually just sitting still with her on your chest would have her asleep in seconds and I didn't dare say anything cause step-sis had tried to tell her to keep my niece still once and boy did we all hear about it!!

ThePinkOne · 21/09/2009 21:12

BTW chunky, the looking at the lips thing.. my dc both got blue round thier mouth when they had wind. But as for the back pounding !!

SmallScrewCap · 21/09/2009 21:21

Had this from a visitor on Saturday night - I gave him a warm bath (poo-free), changed him into fresh clothes, I breastfed for 45 minutes (with him half-sitting so that he could burp as he fed - works a treat but kills my back!), then changed his nappy, then handed him over to visitor while I finally went for the wee I had been desperately trying not to have for the previous hour.

90 seconds later visitor is triumphantly standing over the Moses basket announcing "Look, I got my baby off to sleep"
