To think Anti-Nazi League etc. just make things worse

For some decades now they have turned up at BNP and National Front events, or places where neo-fascists have been speaking to cause disruption.

It very often ends up in violence, people getting stabbed, etc. Presumably many of them are going because they enjoy fighting and violent confrontation.

Why don't they leave the demonstrations to be policed by the police and realise that their actions do no good whatsoever?

(Background:
www.harrowtimes.co.uk/news/4625715.Mosque_protest_breaks_down_into_violence_and_disorder/

There was supposed to have been a protest against a new mosque in Harrow, but for various reasons nobody turned up, leaving only the anti-protest protestors:

"The violence broke out as thousands, lead by Unite Against Fascism (UAF), turned out to opposed a planned demonstration outside the mosque by a group called Stop the Islamisation of Europe.

However, the right-wing group failed to materialised, and with tensions high among the anti-fascist protesters, it soon became clear violence was not far away.

A group of six white men were spotted heading from the station to the mosque at around 5pm, but before they could make their intentions clear, they were chased by dozens of the protesters, some armed with sticks, through the civic centre car park. "
"?This was a worry throughout, and as the numbers started to grow, you could very clearly see a number of people entering with masks, people who did not appear to be from Harrow, and it only needed any kind of excuse for things to turn ugly. "

Similar incidents have been going on for decades, see for instance www.harrogateadvertiser.net/harrogatenews/EXPOSED-BNP-man39s-past-.5362613.jp

I don't think the Anti-Nazi League and United Against Fascism are worthy. Their aims are to prevent the BNP from even speaking in public. This is undemocratic. They are also associated with violence.

Nick Griffin is indeed a foul scumbag.

Incidentally, I LOLed at the 'English Defence League' (who organised many recent protests)

I'd like to say I'm definitely not some guy. I'm "somewoman" who stayed up late playing MN on the 'tinternet and now feel very sleepy!

Definitely just a coincidence.

I (sort of) agree actually. They are very strident and worthy but I there is something about the more extreme members that gets peoples backs up.

Snorbs · 12/09/2009 10:32

The Anti Nazi League made a big difference to the relative popularity of the National Front - the BNP of its day - in many areas of England back in the late 70s and early '80s.

I've never seen ANL supports commit unprovoked attacks on NF/BNP supporters. I can believe it happens as there are some people in it that do like a ruck. I have seen NF members perpetrating unprovoked attacks on black kids as well as on ANL supporters.

For me at least, the fact that there are a small minority of ANL supporters who overstep the mark does not discredit the entire organisation. Whenever BNP twats get up to speak I think it's important and laudable that there is a sizable group of people there to make it clear that what they're saying is poisonous rubbish.

I have been on many ANL demonstrations and although i agree there are a small number of people who go just for a punch up,in my personal experience the violence has almost always been started by the police. The media are very careful to edit this fact.

moondog · 12/09/2009 11:48

Tether, Someguy makessome very interesting and valid points (which is more tha could be said for you).

I agree SG. It also actually ends up working in the favour of idiots like the BNP and far right wing groups because it makes them look under siege and gives them victim status.

BNP have been voted in through a democratic process and have a right to say what they think. By listening to them we may find that it is either a. a load of tripe or b. valid. That is a choice each of us have without having to run gauntlet of screeching humourless holier than thou lefties.

Also bizarre indeed that denying Holocaust is a crime. I like to deny that Mothercare/TGI Fridays?Toys R Us/mobile phones and Tim Westwood ever existed.

Will I be clapped into leg irons forthwith?

moondog · 12/09/2009 11:49

'the violence has almost always been started by the police'

Oh please!

shivermetimbers · 12/09/2009 11:51

I am speaking from personal experience, seen with my own 2 eyes.

tethersend · 12/09/2009 11:56

Moondog-

I'm thrilled that you find someguy's posts interesting and valid. I don't. I'm simply pointing out some decidedly dodgy views he has held on previous posts.

Become embroiled in a discussion of the fascinating points he raises if you wish. I will watch with baited breath to see the ground-shaking radical viewpoints that come flooding forth.

SomeGuy · 12/09/2009 11:57

I would be very careful about advocating people to check your posting history:

Cocaine-fuelled rants advocating borderline paedophilia? Check.

Are you on drugs?

Serious question. This is one of the more bizarre posts I've seen on here.

OP posts:
tethersend · 12/09/2009 12:02

Have a look at your previous posts someguy- or maybe you used a pseudonym? You posting style makes you incredibly distinctive. You were arguing for teenagers to be encouraged to take nude photos of themselves? Remember?

Or are you denying this?

Of course, some of your threads were pulled by MN weren't they?

"Cocaine-fuelled rants" is my assertion.

SomeGuy · 12/09/2009 12:05

You were arguing for teenagers to be encouraged to take nude photos of themselves? Remember? You posting style makes you incredibly distinctive.

I think you must be hallucinating. Or at the very least have me confused with someone else.

So much for 'incredibly distinctive' posting style

"Cocaine-fuelled rants" is my assertion.

I'd say you're definitely on something.

OP posts:
tethersend · 12/09/2009 12:10

Fine; if I'm wrong, then I shall watch you produce a flourish of well argued points to prove your OP hypothesis.

I don't think I am though, and I think you know it.

I shall leave and let you get on with it then....

SomeGuy · 12/09/2009 12:15

Fine; if I'm wrong, then I shall watch you produce a flourish of well argued points to prove your OP hypothesis.

No, it's not fine, you've launched a nonsensical ad hominem attack (including the strange suggestion that I have poor spelling - no idea where you got this from), and now seem to think I'm the one who needs to justify things.

Please seek professional help.

Someguy-

I am back to eat humble pie.

I have indeed got you confused with another poster, which make my accusations unforgivable and actually serve to make me look insane.

Since I made the accusations on your thread, I need to apologise here too.

I shall leave with my tail between my legs...

Tethersend, it's almost a shame that wasn't SomeGuy: being a coke-addled ranter gave him a certain cachet, i think

tethersend · 12/09/2009 15:34

Gah!

moondog · 12/09/2009 15:40

Yes, clear orf!!!

As you were saying SG?

foxytocin · 12/09/2009 15:51

moondog can i pick your brains about something? and can you give me yuor opinion on my Jolly Phonics thread, just started, in Primary Ed?

chegirl · 12/09/2009 19:52

I am greatful for the ANL's stance on the vile BNP and other hate filled racist groups.

Thank you ANL for attempting to protect my children from this menance.

Should the Jewish community and its supporters not have stood up against Mosley for fear of causing a ruck?

No doubt there are a proportion of thugs in the ANL but I doubt the proportion is quite as high as in your average group of BNP supporters.

Also, not sure how anyone can make a march against Jews, Muslims, Black people, Gay people, Gypsies .... worse?

BitOfFun · 12/09/2009 20:06

Exactly, Chegirl. Well said.
