I want to get my DCs a dog. For the last 3 years we have had to rent after having to sell our home and have not a hope in hell of buying again within the foreseeable future!! At our last property (different agent) we asked if we could get one and were told that we could'nt. Am thinking just to get one anyway without telling our current letting agents. I am aware that this will breach the terms our tenancy but so what we are paying lot of money to live here and should be able to live as we please. Why should my kids grow up without a pet because we rent?? We have obviously paid a damage deposit and IF there is any damage, we would rectify it whether from the kids or the dog.

Why should our lives be dictated to just because we can't get a mortgage? AIBU??

Yes you ABU.

I am renting at the moment in the short term, we have animals but looked for a house that would take them. Infact our landlady loves our animals.

YABU. Youhave to stick to the terms of the licencing agrreement otherwise the landlord could evict you. A lot of children don't have pets. If you want a pet then find somewhere that allows pets.

If you do buy a dog and he does damage the place you could have a problem getting a reference which could screw up renting somewhere else when your lettings come to an end. We have rented for the last 7 years and also want a pet, howeverhave chosen not to as most properties say no pets which means is we get one, if we are asked to leave, no one will take us. Landlords have become really strict and to be fair, if you get somewhere you like you don't want to stuff up getting a new place because you have a pet. Kids come first and its nice to have some security, spech if you are renting. We had a complete asshole for a landlord for 2 years in a home we hated. We now have somewhere we love, and to be honest if we had a dog or cat we would have had to settle for a horrid place again with a landlord from hell to keep him.
