The Buffy vs Twilight thing is amazing. Really well-made, too. They must have spent hours looking for just the right clips from 7 whole seasons of Buffy!

Vampires are not fully functional? I thought part of the vampire myth was the sex/blood craving.

Depends which myth you look at. They can move muscles so why not inflate penises?

I have to say I enjoyed the book (only read the first one), just because it reminded me of first loves and all that, but I was extremely irratated by Bella's dizzyness, always falling over, always hurting herself, always needing protection even in everyday situations. Edward not letting her drive despite her being adamant that she wanted to and it was her car. It all got a bit too much at the end.

Have not read the twilight series but 13 yr DD is mad on them. Have had to reeducate her on proper vampires. Did a paper on them for A level English years ago. This Meyers gets most of the vampire traits wrong and appears to want to write a sub/dom love story then usesd Vamps to make it 'OK'
I don't think it makes girls want to be dominated by a normal bloke, just a hot vamp.

actually i think the real objection i have to twilight is the lack of shagging... as a 33 year old it irritates me but as a 15 year old i think a 2000 page long foreplay session would have driven me over the edge of madness- i probably would have offered myself to the first passing stranger!

also on the abuse thing- they end up having a very equal relationship (and apparently lots of sex, oh hum).

on the whole i see where you're all driving at but twilight is simply not subtle enough, and not good enough to insinuate this type of mentality into young girls.

vacaloca, i read your link.. all those things are true but i think they also manage to miss the point somehow... or at least gloss over the numerous references to Bella's strength, her courage, her independence etc. she takes care of her mum, her dad, she is actually rather loyal to her friends (ok so she only has a few, perhaps only one, but lots of people don't have lots of friends).

moreover, teenage love is obsessive, exclusive, claustrophic and completely bonkers- god i remember being madly "in love" with a guy in my high school i had never even spoken to, i would have done anything for him! i once spent an afternoon combing through the entire telephone book (whcih was split by suburb and then by alphabetical order, rather than the other way round) so i could find his number, memorise it and... that's it, i never even called!

They are badly written books that's my problem with them. They're awful.

And the characters are obnoxious. Edward is a moody twat and Bella is an idiot.

Also they have so few vampire characteristics that they're barely worthy of the name.

yeah the coldness rather put me off too.. and the flowery breath... although it all comes in rather handy if you end up in a very hot country (giving away a bit of the plot here...)

And Bella is a major Mary Sue.

Yes I so liked the Buffy/Edward link... was so pleased to see Buffy kicking his arse.

I would agree they lack of vampire sex in Twilight left me disappointed. However I am watching season 5 Buffy at the moment.. not long before we get to season 6 and the Buffy and Spike shagathon begins woohoo!!
