to buy stuff on credit when I know I am about to go bankrupt?

dingdong05 · 08/09/2009 20:40

so, here I am, I am getting everything together to go bankrupt- got new basic bank account, details off all my creditors, rearrange all my direct debit payment etc
Suddenly, through the door comes a letter from my cc- they've increased my limit by £600!

With £600 I could pay off a debt to a small company (the rest is all credit cards) and buy that dishwasher I've been desperate for. Maybe even get a new, although cheap, carpet to replace the disgrace in the hall. Of course I'd need to do this before I sent in the paperwork, but that's no problem.

And really, what's £600 when it's added to the £12000 I already owe? Of course, when I borrowed the £12000 I did intend to pay it back, but know for a fact I won't be paying back the £600.

Assuming I am on benefits, have no other support and have been labouring under massive debts for years, AIBU to take advantage?

Yeah I have to say that's silly. And the extra electricity it'll cost to run. I've never seen the point of them myself. Just as much work loading / unloading the things and putting gunk in them IMO.

GibbonInARibbon · 09/09/2009 10:49

Firstly lmfao @ 'you do realise you'll need to pay someone to install it properly, too, though?'

Secondly, your blasé attitude is shocking.
Would be interested to know how in the current economic climate you have been offered more credit when your credit score must be appalling (to be filing for bankruptcy)

katiestar · 09/09/2009 11:24

if you are going to do it then I think you should withdraw the money as cash so that you can say you used it for essentials like food and electricity.

itsmeolord · 09/09/2009 12:10

British Gas and some other energy companies have grants available for people on benefits or very low incomes to help pay for most of the bankruptcy charges.

Glad you took advice from several different parties. Just make sure you only use those who are non-charging not for profit organisations.

scottishmummy · 09/09/2009 12:17

deep breath, stop fannying about writing whimsy posts about dishwashers

you have some serious business to attend to
get advice

i imagine this is very stressful. i am guessing this dishwasher lark is an attempt to deflect from the deep shite you are in

dingdong05 · 09/09/2009 13:04

thanks bethnoir, it's good to know someone has read my posts!

i do find it interesting to note that this particular cc increases my limit everytime i get close to the limit when they can see i only pay the minimum amount since they hiked up the interest, but when i ask for help i have my limit reduced with no notice

don't get me wrong, i really do want a dhishwasher, but then i want a car, and a holiday, and... well i live in a consumer society and i want what's there.

however i would also like to buy the food i like rather than what's reduced, to take my son to the beach without worrying about affording the bus fare ("you're not working, walk there you lazy mother!" ) i would also like to pay off my debts... whilst i can see a time i can afford the bus, i can't see a way of paying off my debts- in fact i have been told my creditors wouldn't accept a debt management or trust deed from me because the amount i could offer them would be too low

going bc is not something i have taken lightly, and it's not a quick fix to a recent problem.

BUT there's little point in saying anymore because less than a handful have actually read my follow up posts!

goodbye!

'bye dings and good luck!

HelenaBonhamCarter · 09/09/2009 13:26

Good lord is anyone really this dim?

Sorry to say it OP but you come across as incredibly inane. I don't even know where to start.

Bleh · 09/09/2009 13:32

YABVVVU. You need a dishwasher because you don't like doing dishes and your hands are dry and cracked? Thought of buying washing up gloves?

mosschops30 · 09/09/2009 13:34

is there a reason you are unable to work dingdong?

you remind me of those people on watchdog and similar programmes saying what a 'disgrace' it is that the bank continued to lend money or increase limits. Why does no-one take responsibility for themselves anymore?
You know the money is not yours, you know you cannot pay it back surely its a no-brainer!

diddl · 09/09/2009 13:35

This thread is a wind up, surely?

cheesesarnie · 09/09/2009 13:37

this is why i dont have a credit card-far too easy.

i dont have spare money so i have to save up for things-even things i need(dc coats, shoes).

same cant be said for dh,but im careful.

mayorquimby · 09/09/2009 13:39

i presume this is a wind up. otherwise you are parasitic scum.

GrimmaTheNome · 09/09/2009 13:46

Having scanned through the thread - including the OPs follow ups - its awful that CC companies are still putting temptation in people's way like this. Will they ever learn? . Glad you're resisting dingdong.

Though I did have some sympathy with the idea of paying off a small company as that wouldn't increase your overall debt and might make a difference to them that it wouldn't to the CC company.

twirlymum · 09/09/2009 13:47

What dilemma456 said.

hatesponge · 09/09/2009 22:13

I agree that CC/loan companies should not be offering more credit to the already debt-laden.

A few years ago a friend got behind on repayments for a £15k loan she had taken out (in addition to a relatively modest £50k mortgage....yes I know she should have remortgaged as their house was worth 3x that but sadly she didn't ask my advice at the time!) after her then DP lost his job & was out of work for a while.

As soon as he got another job, they got in contact with one of the dodgier finance co's who offered them a £40k loan based on her DP saying at the suggestion of the loan advisor(!) he was guaranteed to double his income from new job by doing overtime (he wasnt).

how, if someone can't afford a loan of X, can you justify offering them double X and a bit more, and on the basis of falsified income?!

sadly I dont think its an isolated incident.....

expatinscotland · 09/09/2009 22:53

I had a bankrupcy in the US over 8 years ago.

Unlike the OP, it was the result of a divorce, two redundancies and the crap system of 'healthcare' in the US. There's no real benefits system there. Unemployment is hard to collect and for a very limited time only.

Anyhow, it went through and I didn't even think of applying for credit at all because of the bankrupcy.

Imagine my surprise when all these credit card offers kept pouring through my letterbox, almost daily, specialising in 'post bankrupcy' clients.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 09/09/2009 23:02

Oh just go the distance and get some Creme de la Mer for your hands. The official receiver probably won't even notice

scottishmummy · 09/09/2009 23:34

what is creme de mer?i use clarins

Ninks · 09/09/2009 23:48

Using Creme de la Mer for hands

Oh that reminds me of when I was a teen and used Clearasil on my shoulders because it was too harsh for my face and was soundly reprimanded by my mate, (child of LP in Thatcher years) who bloody slaved in the rain and snow (paper round) to buy things like that and my parents would just add it to their supermarket list along with most grooming staples

Ninks · 09/09/2009 23:52

Poncey Cream

A veritable "snip" at almost a grand for 500ml. Use it on your feet OP

scottishmummy · 09/09/2009 23:56

OMG the cost!use clinique & clarins high st prices

for feet i put vaseline on heels/feet and put sock on and leave on overnight. in morning soft as babies arse

Pikelit · 10/09/2009 00:49

Sake! What the fuck are the words "desperate for" and "dishwasher" doing in the same sentence anyway. Get a grip.

fussymummy · 10/09/2009 00:59

I know how hard it is to be in debt, but im sorry, no way is a dishwasher needed!!!!!!!!!!

A dish cloth and a bottle of washing up liquid is all you need!!!!!!!!

Much cheaper!!!!!!!!

Have you tried getting an IVA instead of bankruptcy?
