To get dreadlocks?

Spidermama · 07/09/2009 20:28

I have ALWAYS wanted dreads. Always.

I am caucasian btw.

Tonight I found myself googling then texting around. I now have an appointment to see someone tomorrow about getting dreads.

OMG!

She does them by weaving and twisting and doesn't use any wax or sticky products.

My hair has always been a bit crap. Now it's greying it's even crapper. I love dreads on other women so figure this is a shot to nothing.

Dare I ask, what do you reckon?

Sorry, I was talking about this link

Spidermama · 07/09/2009 21:58

Aww querty that poor kid. How awful.
It's pretty rare though lets face it. She may have been getting alopecia anyway for all we know.

I live in Brighton and I am bored shitless of seeing white people with dreadlocks (never mind middle aged women having midlife crisis tattoos of butterflies on their ankles), but you don't need others to tell you how to wear your hair do you? Do whatever you want - you can just get rid of them if you don't like them.

QueenOfFuckingEverything · 07/09/2009 22:00

So in summary, I think dreads look fab on pretty much anyone regardless of age. Only exception is people who have one big dread like a smelly carpet 'cos they don't look after them at all.

QueenOfFuckingEverything · 07/09/2009 22:03

at juxtaposition of mine and donkeyderby's posts there.

PrammyMammy · 07/09/2009 22:04

ah, there is a man in Edinburgh with one big dread, looks like a beaver tail. Scary.

Spidermama · 07/09/2009 22:04

Donkey maybe you'd find Ditchling more to your taste? Or Haywards Heath? It doesn't pay to be bored shitless after all.

Obviously that big ol' rasta turdy mono-dread is NOT the look I'm going for here.

When I lived in London many moons ago (pre DD) there were a crackhead very-obviously-drug-addicted couple who used to beg on the train that went to where I lived. They'd always get on and off at Brixton 'cos it is an unmanned station with no ticket barriers. One of them had the single biggest dread I've ever seen, I mean it was like an enormous great doormat on her head.

Anyway this was years ago. But last time I went down that way there she was! Dread three times the size and still asking for spare change to get her to a hostel in Croydon.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 07/09/2009 22:16

QofFE love your hair

I was never brave enough.

Maybe I will wait til 40 and do it then, which will have additional side effect of irritating thesecondcoming

spider yes it is the skanky monodreads down the back that honk, IIRC.

Go for it, go on you know you want to

Spidermama · 07/09/2009 22:32

I used to live in Brixton and I'm sure I saw that very couple, regularly, at the bottom of the steps down from the station doing crack or something.

OP posts:
QueenOfFuckingEverything · 07/09/2009 22:33

Yeah probably - they were there from 2000-2008 that I know of!

Spidermama · 07/09/2009 22:36

Poor fuckers.

QueenOfFuckingEverything · 07/09/2009 22:47

There but for the grace of god and all that eh.

I knew people who were doing similar when I lived there but now they are all either sorted out or, well, dead. I was amazed that girl was still there after so long.

Makes me very thankful for the way my life has gone.

Iggi999 · 07/09/2009 22:48

So nice to see a dread-thread! I used to have them, when was a young thing . Didn't go to a hairdressers though, just stopped washing my hair for 5 years. Saved a fortune on shampoo.

Spidermama · 07/09/2009 22:53

Iggi did it smell? I stopped washing mine for about a year and it looked fab and thick and silky. I washed it again in the end as it had a kind of waxy smell. It could have been because I wore a hat a lot.

OP posts:
QueenOfFuckingEverything · 07/09/2009 22:58

I actually find washing helps my hair dread up better. I use cheap nasty shampoo though - nothing that will soften it or make it silky. Supermarket cheap own brand apple stuff is pretty good, and in hot weather Original Source mint shower gel is lovely and tingly. Dreads can get hot!

I didn't go to a hairdresser either, the first lot I did myself with wax and backcombing, and the second my lovely friend twisted and rolled and fiddled with for me.

Iggi999 · 07/09/2009 22:59

Hi Spider - well no-one every complained! It did smell (wet doggy smell) if left out in the rain. I do believe that hair sort of looks after itself when left alone. I guess we are just used to hair that smells of fruit, not hair! Traded them in for a promotion and an easy life

ninagleams · 07/09/2009 23:18

My brother in law has dreads. They're very neat. He doesn't use any products and washes his hair as usual and he goes to see a woman with a crochet hook every once in a while who ensures that they stay tidy.

If you want them go for it!

Spidermama · 07/09/2009 23:38

Does he have thick hair nina? I wonder if mine is too thin.

I've decided I won't put human hair extensions in. Too dodgy. Unless I met the donor.

I've just got rid of my dreads. Had them just under a year. Loved the look of them but hated how much work they took. Ripping them apart (to stop getting one giant dread) hurts. A LOT! Took more time than brushing my hair LOL.

...Oh & you don't need wax. That just glues the hair together. That's not dreads! Dreads are knotted hair. You don't need to add anything. Just stop brushing! You can go natural like I did - or section your hair up & backcomb each section to give it a head start. Generally if you have curly knotty hair it will dread quicker than if you have smooth straight hair.

There's a lot of crap on the net about dreads, mainly from the manufacturers of wax...if you want good info about dreads the forum dreadlock truth is the best place IMO.

SomeGuy · 08/09/2009 01:21

ick ick ick.

CarmenSanDiego · 08/09/2009 05:53

I know a lady in her thirties who has floor-length woolly extensions in bright pinky-red. She runs a very successful business and is absolutely stunning to look at.

All this stereotyping is a bit silly. Yes, mousy dreadlocks on a middle-aged Boden wearing mum might look a bit desperate, but if you really plan your look, they can be rather fabulous.

dillinger · 08/09/2009 06:01

Go for it, I farking love mine

dillinger · 08/09/2009 06:03

Oh and I second the dreadlock truth website
