It has recently been pointed out to me that this is insane behaviour. Is this true?!

iron outer clothes, not inner!

Pikelit · 02/09/2009 16:21

There's a simple secret to a (virtually) iron-free life. Take that extra care with the washing when it comes out of the machine and 99% of it will dry just perfectly. Stick underwear in the tumble drier. Life is definitely too short to be hanging damp socks out.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 02/09/2009 16:34

The only thing I ever iron is hama beads. And even then only under extreme pressure.

gorionine · 02/09/2009 16:40

yanbu, mainly because do it too. In my case it has nothing to do with wanting the vests to look nice even though they cannot be seen. It has to do with the fact that ironed items take much less space than non iironed ones.

Pikelit not eveeryone has got a tumble drier.

sparkle12mar08 · 02/09/2009 16:45

I haven't ironed in ten years! You're all mad, maaad I tell you!

theseboobsaremadeformilking · 02/09/2009 16:51

Can't you think if something else you'd rather do - and then do it?
I think you're bonkers

gorionine · 02/09/2009 16:52

Sparkle, you have to give me tips, I really wish I did not have to iron at all! How do you do it?

nancy75 · 02/09/2009 16:53

i iron everything - including vests and pants

katiestar · 02/09/2009 16:56

I iron everything to make it fit in the drawers better

bradsmissus · 02/09/2009 16:57

Somebody I once worked with warned me I was on the road to Divorce if I didn't start taking better care of DH - all because I didn't iron his socks and boxers!!! He reasoning? "You don't buy them with peg marks in them" !!!!!

Thankfully, DH and I are still happily married 13 years later and he does more ironing than me!!!

PacificDogwood · 02/09/2009 17:30

Tips for iron free life:
Take things out of washing machine as soon as wash is done
Shake sharply and hang up nice and straight
Outside is preferable but pulley in kitchen/utility room with do
If available put everything in tumble dryer for 5-10 minutes before hanging up
Only buy things that need no ironing ie stretch jersey over cotton poplin any day of the week

Disclaimer: I am fashion-free-clean-but-not-stylish zone
Disclaimer of disclaimer: Even if I was Style Goddess I still think those of you who iron socks/pants/vest/dish cloths are maaaaaad!!

pjmama · 02/09/2009 17:36

I draw the line at pants and socks, but the vests do look so much nicer when ironed! I acknowledge that I may well be bonkers...

Great! So now we've sorted out the ironing, does anyone know how to get suncream stains out of tshirts?!

I think I really need to get out more...

mumeeee · 02/09/2009 18:37

Yes you are bieng insane and making more work for yourself then you need to. Vests do not need ironong.

lovechoc · 02/09/2009 18:46

YABU but not as U as my MIL who irons TEATOWELS and PANTS.

Hulababy · 02/09/2009 19:09

TBH anyone who irons things like vests, pants, tea towels and bedding ahve way too much time on their hands!

liath · 02/09/2009 19:13

YANBU. I like ironing, it's strangely therapeutic.....though I draw the line at socks, pant and enormous duvet covers.

TabithaTwitchet · 02/09/2009 19:17

YANBU, I always iron everything of DD's (except socks), I also iron bedding and teatowels. I just can't bear to put stuff away in the drawer unironed. When DD was newborn I let my standards slip and just ironed her clothes, DH and I went round looking crumpled and sleeping in unironed sheets. I hate ironing, but I hate unironed clothes more - and I love crisply ironed sheets they are my ultimate indulgence.

Podrick · 02/09/2009 19:18

YANBU I think it is quite scummy not to iron things - I have everything perfectly ironed in my house! House in general is actually a bit of a tip though in all honesty...but laundry standards are vv high!

Not unreasonable, just very strange.
Most things drop out. Avoid buying what doesn't drop out. Iron shirts at a push on a daily basis and verything visible for special occasions like interviews, weddings, funerals, etc.

ShellingPeas · 02/09/2009 19:37

lol at LadyGlencora. I never iron anything - DH does his shirts for work (he's a clever chap and can use an iron). Just hang them up asap after washing, don't overfill the load in washing machine and then fold them and put them away.

Sheets, duvet cover, tea towels and underwear - why iron? Surely there must be something else you can do instead, like MN?

purplecurlywurly · 02/09/2009 20:01

Yes, it's a total waste of time. The DCs are not going to even notice if their clothes are ironed! Do people really iron baby clothes?!

mathanxiety · 02/09/2009 20:09

I just fold stuff really badly.
