To have told my son, who was screaming, screeching and yelling that he wanted to go to jail...

That the cupboard in his bedroom was a jail and he should go and sit in that.

In my defence, he has been screeching for half an hour and I am at the end of my damn tether!

And should I go up and fetch him out now?

oh - to clarify - I have not made him go and sit in it, or ordered him to, he is not being punished in it! I simply told him if he wanted to be in jail, his cupboard was one

Just in case it reads like I locked him in the cupboard!

is it all quiet?

he may have gone to sleep

PeedOffWithNits · 01/09/2009 20:05

why has he been yelling that he wants to go to jail?

Oxymoronic · 01/09/2009 20:05

Why does he want to go to jail bless him??

PinkTulips · 01/09/2009 20:05

pmsl

how old is he?

and no YANBU

ElieRM · 01/09/2009 20:05

Well, he said he WANTED to go to jail...you were merely facilitating his request...sort of.
And I'll imagine he'll come out of his own accord as soon as he gets hungry/bored/feels he's proved his point.
How long has he been in the cupboard for?

HecatesTwopenceworth · 01/09/2009 20:08

He's 9. I have no idea about the jail thing. It's the latest of his little 'oddnesses' (he's autistic). The other one is saying "naked" or "I'm naked" every 10 minutes.

Odd little beggar!

He seems happy enough in the cupboard, tbh.

OP posts:
Glitterknickaz · 01/09/2009 20:09

that's inspired

HecatesTwopenceworth · 01/09/2009 20:09

oh, sorry elie - just under 10 minutes now.

bratley · 01/09/2009 20:13

If he's quiet, and happy.... just check on him in another 10minutes!
I saw a post of yours a few days ago about the 'I'm naked' thing, its still going then!? Naked in the jail would be better than naked in the garden!

saintmaybe · 01/09/2009 20:13

Wow, that's ds2's big thing atm, going to jail. He's autistic too. Must be something in the air.

And, no, yanbu. Giving them their wishes in fantasy, in a 'talkhsokidswilllisten' stylee. well, you've gone one better!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 01/09/2009 20:18

that's quite a co-incidence saint. Is yours scared of going or wanting to go?

oh yes, bratley. still going on. it's quite something to be walking round with a young lad yelping "naked" every few steps!

I wonder what will be next?

OP posts:
saintmaybe · 01/09/2009 20:25

I think he is scared of it, but it's his big thing that he says he's going to do/ wants to do whenever he's really upset or if he thinks he's done something wrong, or if he's feeling panicky/ angry (I think).

He's really scared of police and 'security' too. He came screaming into the house a couple of weeks ago, 'Oh no! It's the police! Run! Hide! Aagh!' when he saw some. Which doesn't look suspicious at all

ChookKeeper · 01/09/2009 20:44

I've worked with a boy on the AS who felt so overwhelmed at times that we had a big cardboard box for him to sit in. He enjoyed the solitude and the chance to get away from anything and everything - he always came out in the end

bratley · 01/09/2009 21:41

I suppose aslong as he doesn't get naked, Hecate

Bigpants1 · 01/09/2009 21:44

I thought this was another thread from TheLadyEvenStar-oops!!
I have ds with AS who will be visiting ME in jail, if he keeps going the way he does!

NinjaRain · 01/09/2009 22:04

Have you thought about some sort of interaction with PSCO? I had to get ds to speak to some when he was in his getting lost stage. He is also in a only trust experts phase so we've had to have a visit from the fire support officers too. TO get him used to the sound of fire alarms he has to test them weekly Ds is still scared of jail but less scared of police (except when he has been naughty)

Now being naked is something we're still working on. At least he doesnt generally get naked in public (unless you count in the backseat of the car) thank goodness he is as young as he is.

colditz · 01/09/2009 22:08

jail is small. It only has one entrance point. YOu cannot make choices in jail. Everything is strictly timetabled, and not much happens. Nothing is ever a surprise (as far as a nine year old would comprehend)

Now, this doesn't appeal to me, but then, I am not a nine year old living with the bewilderment that is Autism.

Ds1 often puts blankets up around his brother's bed (which is the low bunk) when he is angry or has been told off. I don't know why, but he seems to find it soothing. Sometimes I tell him to go and get into his brother's bed, when he needs to calm down!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 02/09/2009 09:25

That makes perfect sense, colditz.

My boys also put blankets up. They have bunk beds and they tuck blankets under the top bunk mattress to create a cave or something out of the bottom bunk. But I expect all little boys do that anyway.
