To think the X factor degrades people who are not the same as the rest of society?

Didn't know how to sensitively phrase that, but I was watching the Xtra factor last night and there was a parade of people, who to put it kindly, were slightly different to me and my family. For example the two till workers from Asda, the man with the enormous knob (or hernia) and the pork pie factory worker. That awful woman whose name I don't remember stood ripping the piss out of them.
I understand wang/hernia man but the rest of it seemed cruel and cheap. Should we go back to the days of looking at the simpleton in a freak show or AIBU?

Very true portblack. Also, the other two women (?something Divas) who have no chance of winning were put through. None of it makes sense to me. That tragic Boyle woman last year, was, IMO, bullied and exploited.

God, I sooo agree! It is just so cringe worthy!
Some of the people who audition are just out for their 5 minutes but others take it very seriously.
My bro has learning difficulties and very low self esteem and I can only imagine what having his hopes raised like that and then being blatently laughed at would do to him. (He thought hre might audition last year but luckily we managed to discourage him!)
It ,makes it worse because some of these people clearly think they might have a chance.
I would be mortified if someone laughed in my face in front of 1000's of people.
Did any one see it last year when a bloke performed Brittany Spears Slave. He apologised afterwards because he knew people were laughing at him.
Blatent bullying IMO!

Ooops, sorry for crap typo!

I was really a bit disturbed by 'erection/hernia man' last night- it was hysterical, but simultaneously really pitiful and distressing- that poor man, and his poor daughters backstage!!
Not as disturbing as Simon Cowell singing along to 'your sex is on fire' though. Shudder!
I think X factor crosses the 'Victorian Freak Show' line often- it is a bit unedifying, just like Jeremy Kyle, as another poster said. Like eating a whole packet of biscuits then feeling sick and still empty!!

That's a good description wook!

Unedifying but strangely addictive!

LadyStealthPolarBear · 30/08/2009 12:03

Which one was erection/hernia man??
The bits I find dreadful are the 40/50 year olds who come on saying "this is my last chance to make anything of my life" - that's so sad. Don't mind so much laughing at the 20year olds who can't sing but think they can.

LadyStealthPolarBear · 30/08/2009 12:04

Not to mention Cheryl's fur dress

I think it's worse than playground bullying most of the time and find it sad that people want to watch such crap and enjoy ridiculing people! I did enjoy the first series all those years ago....but they're stringing it out now. The sooner all the reality rubbish on tv ends the better as far as I'm concerned.
