In the last 5 days I have had:

Thieves break into my home and steal my car

Abuse hurled at me by a group of teens because I asked them to be a bit quieter in the pictures

My new (w reg but have owned it for 2 days to replace stolen car)car keyed in Ikea car park and an abusive note left on my windscreen (I stupidly thought it was going to be a sorry note with insurance details!)

A man punch my hire car window (didn't break luckily) because I beeped him in a beep beep not an angry BEEEEEEEEEP fashion because he walked out infront of me at a junction and I wasn't sure if he had seen me.

I live in quite a nice area And I'm so fed up. It makes me want to turn into a vicious hard as nails, "say/do that to me again and I'll kick your arse" type.

I think part of the problem, navyeyelasH, is that to drive one has to keep on a knife-edge between courtesy and taking the initiative, else you'd either sit at a junction forever (unless there was nothing coming at all) or be like a past (Sicilian) colleague of mine, who seemed to find gaps to fit into when many would consider his driving "risky" at best, "wreckless" at worst.

Still, he was less frightening than another past colleague who drove big American cars. As a passenger I would be view near head-ons, while he was nearer the kerb, of course, and would have probably survived through such a crash, only putting me and the oncoming driver at risk!

By heck, glad I'm no longer living in Sussex!

Well I sympathise with all those examples, so yes you can send them to Mars....but generally you need to define 'riff-raff'. I suspect riff-raff is in the eye of the beholder.

I sympathise with your bad week, but it doesn't follow that society is going to hell in a handbasket - the very fact that these episodes stand out to you and to other posters is the very fact they are unusual - society functions well through things we don't notice, recall or report - people letting you past, stepping out of your way, parking carefully, not writing notes or punching windows - we barely observe these things happening, but they make up most of your daily life.

The people who were horrible were aberrations rather than the norm. People (including 26 y o) have always and will always think things used to be better - it seems to be human nature, for some reason. But in reality some things are better, some worse.

It can help sometimes when you're fed up to concentrate on good stuff you see - people smiling, being polite and helpful, etc - gets a bit of perspective back.

OrmIrian, I wasn't sure what I meant by riff raff, I just didn't want to use a term that would stereotypes social groups, ie chavs. I suppose what I mean is all the people that think to go around being rude, obnoxious, selfish fuckwits?

Habbib, I know exactly what you're saying, I'm normally rather rational but when you have a bad strreak like this it's noce to just wallow a bit ya know? I think sadly a lot of the situation I find myself in lately, ie Ikea on a Sunday (!) mean I'm not seeing as much of the nice stuff as I usually do so am feeling a bit Bleugh about it all. Whilst I see this events as unusual the irrational part of me is saying, "it's the start of things to come" but you're right it isn't and I AIBU a bit.

But still, imagine how lovely it would be if we could send em to mars!

sorry about the spelling I'm rushing as DP is moaning about my MN habit - I'm off to paint my hallway.
