to think MNHQ should not send you details (incl. email address) of the person who has reported your post

Have been dwelling on this for a week or so now. I had a post reported , following which I received an email from MNHQ which they asked me a question, and below the email was, what I assume is the system generated notification MNHQ receive when the red alert button is clicked.

Through this I was informed of the username and registered email address of the person who reported my post.

Is this what normally happens when posts are reported? Because it has put me off reporting posts if my information is given out.

I think giving out the username is bad enough - as this could cause retaliation through the boards. But personal email is definitely unacceptable - with this information you can find out the persons real name (i.e. by searching for them on Facebook via their email address).

Now I am not vindictive or even too nosy, so I did nothing with the information I received. But other people might.

AIBU to think it's not on for MNHQ to divulge such information?

Thanks so much to the person who reported this, this is absolutely NOT what we normally do and is a huge and hopefully one-off error. FuckoffDailyMail, please can you send the email back to [email protected] - just as you received it - so we can see which numbskull

Pandoraneedsbugs · 28/08/2009 22:45

Tis very quiet here this evening do forgive me

onetiredmummy · 28/08/2009 22:47

I hope tea duty includes us, I could do with a cuppa : )

Pandoraneedsbugs · 28/08/2009 22:48

While you are here Carrie I think there is another way this sort of thing happens as well (all to do with my annoying internet connection) I will have another try and see if I am right or wrong!

SlartyBartFast · 28/08/2009 22:48

enjoy your tea

FuckOffDailyMail · 28/08/2009 22:51

Phew - am glad it is not normal procedure. At the time I thought it was odd, but as I say the more I pondered it, the more it unnerved me.

Carrie - will forward you the email to the address you have given. But now I feel like a naughty schoolgirl reporting someone to the headmistress.

BitOfFun · 28/08/2009 23:04

If FuckOffDailyMail wins the next big comp, we'll know she's got Justine over a barrel

FuckOffDailyMail · 28/08/2009 23:11

TrillianAstra · 29/08/2009 10:54

Actually I think I'd quite like to be deleted one time. It would give an air of mystery around what I actually said.

We got your email, FuckOffDailyMail .
Thank you.

Whippings over barrels etc will take place shortly.

fanjolina · 01/09/2009 17:29

I am shocked at this. It is such a breach of data protection. MNHQ - are you going to apologise to the poster that you released personal details of?

FuckOffDailyMail · 04/09/2009 21:12

Fanjolina - I got an apology email from MN Towers (not that i felt the need to be apologised to I might add).

Not sure if the other MNer did.

For anyone concerned about using an e-mail address that is used for membership, but also gets used for work e-mail and other stuff, I can only (happily) recommend using SpamGourmet.com

It's a service which will forward mail to your existing e-mail address, but gives a level of anonymity (since there's no link to your work or ISP) and you can create as many unique mail addresses as you want.

address is of form [email protected]

You choose the username (and your own password)

The part is a limit on the number of messages (maximum 20, it goes down until it hits 0 and if you do nothing it 'eats' further messages) You can set the number higher or whitelist valid senders.

The part allows you to have unique words (eg name of site)
[email protected]
[email protected]

You can "whitelist" mail addresses or domains (eg mumsnet.com ) so all their mail is OK.

If anyone else finds the mail address (eg someone hacks a website and grabs list of all members / customers) then they can send mail, but once the gets to 0, further mail (spam) is eaten by SpamGourmet.

Handy if you swap ISPs, too, as you only change the "where to send mail" address on the SpamGourmet site, and every shop or website that send mail needs no change to your mail address.
