DH and I have separate bank accounts (personal) and a joint account. I get paid directly to the joint account, and the difference between my portion of the bills and my wages are trf to my personal account, DH gets paid to his personal and trf his bills money to the joint.

At the beginning on Aug, I checked the joint bank balance and saw I had £250 in there, which was a lot lower than I was expecting, esp as both DH and my money was in there, and only the mortgage payment had gone out.

Rang the bank, asking whether DH money had cleared, they said it had on the Fri. I proceded to have a mini stress, and asked what had gone out between the Fri and the Wed to take the account balance to £250. Man at bank checked the transactions, had to add up everything from the date the money went in and couldn't work out why he got a different figure to the screen. Eventually worked out that DH's money wasn't registering as going in on the running balance.

Man said that if any DD bounced whilst it was being fixed, they'd refund charges (though why they didn't pay them given my account actually had the right money in it got me a bit annoyed).

Account was checked on the Mon, and balance was corrected.

Checked the account on the Fri, the balance had shot up. Hadn't been paid into the account, so presumed that they'd made another error and registered DH's money twice (was just before pay day and account should be near to nil, but was registering 1500!)

Rang the bank. Spoke to a lady who didn't really get my issue, tried to go through the account with me and couldn't see what I was getting at (such as, if money was going out, why my balance was going UP).

Left the account for a few days, checked on Monday after my pay day, and balance seemed a bit more stable to what we'd expect.

Been to take some cash out today, balance is £550 (lower than I'd expect!) but we can withdraw £1160 which I just dont understand?! I did a quick sum that if I took the account balance, less the money I've withdrawn today and yesterday, less the transfers to my account / saving account, PLUS £1170 gets me back to the £1160 - but DH hasn't trf his money, so we are not expecting there to be this money in.

The bank seem totally confused over this £1170 (the original payment from DH) and its going in and out. I'm getting really pissed off as half the time they dont understand when I phone up what is causing the problem or even tell me what the account should be. My balance hasn't been right since approx 1st July and I've lost track. The bank seem to think that if they bounce anything, they'll pay charges and it will all be okay, but don't seem to get that I'm concerned if something bounces it will affect my relationship with that company iyswim.

I'm fed up pf phoning them. Esp when I discover the problem at 5:00 and the bank isn't open.

DH doesn't understand why I'm concerned, so he's just making me ier!

So, AIBU to expect my bank to get my balance right, and, as a bonus point, can you guess what bank I'm with

Change all your accounts to first direct - just takes a phone call - you'll get a cash bonus, they'll transfer the direct debits and standing orders.

You and DH can both link to the same joint account and you can check and manipulate online and by phone 24 hours a day

I didn't even know they did current accounts. I thought they were just savings and mortgages.

I've only worked in the industry for 10 years...

Will look at the link re first direct

Yep, NR do current accounts, we set up the account with them when we were young (and stupid) to make it easier as we had a mortgage with NR and we wanted a joint account to cope with the bills.

This is our first real issue with them, but we have been thinking for a while about changing.

Although smile don't give you money for opening an account with them (I don't think so anyway...) they are also excellent, and, as they are part of the Co-operative bank, they are "ethical" too (will not invest your money in tobacco, arms companies, etc). If such things are important to you.

Their customer service is brilliant, you can do the whole thing on t'internet and use Co-op branches too. And they will transfer DDs etc for you.
