will be shot down in flames for this but i think its terrible you did not stick up for your dd.

i always felt safe when in my mums company when i was younger and have seen her sticking up for me manytimes.

i could not imagine someone saying that to my dd and me doing nothing about it, fair enough not everyone is assertive enough to stand and argue but even pulling her away and telling the man is it not on would have been enough.

yada, i get what you mean, but saying anything TO the man might have made matters worse, you don't want DC to witness a slanging match or swearing etc

i would have calmy reassured DD "its OK, that man is not well" and walked away, reminding her how lovely she looked and that everyone else said so too and how proud you were etc etc
