Neighbour has good job, four teenage kids, and a rabbit..I mention the good job because whilst she's not flush with cash, she's not on the breadline either !

I've had concerns about the bunny before because one of his eyes went cloudy but they didn't bother taking him to the vet.

Got a panicked text this morning, neighbour leaving this afternoon on holiday (in this country, staying with friends) but rabbit was having fits on the garden path - none of the teenagers would touch it and neither would she.

She wanted someone to come and put it back into it's hutch so it wouldn't get eaten by foxes so she could go on holiday !

Went round with DH and a cat basket - poor thing was semi-concious, eye blown a blood vessel, one teenager said it hadn't eaten for days and couldn't walk yesterday, mum said it was fine until this morning. Every few minutes poor thing would fit. DH gently put it into cat basket and I told neighbour she MUST take it to PDSA or vet and get it put to sleep and she was NOT to hutch it and leave it to die (and rot) whilst she swanned off on holiday.

Got back this afternoon to empty basket, thankyou note and plant - checked with teenager and apparently the bunny was taken away and euthanised but I do wonder.....

Grrrr

I hope she recovers.

And I think if there is any chance of pineapple juice encouraging penile growth, I will stay well away myself!

However much you like rabbits, I don't think you can really compare them to children, do you? I wouldn't want to pick up a fitting rabbit, doesn't mean I'm a psychopath who wouldn't help an ill child.
It does mean, however, that I don't own any pets, as I would be rubbish at it and have no interest whatsoever.

Soupdragon: For trying to get someone else to put a bunny who had been sick for days (as the teenager said) back in a hutch, without a vet seeing her. If a rabbit is fitting, they need immediate attention. If what the teenager said is right, a rabbit who is not eating or able to walk is very poorly indeed. Any rabbit owner now has a legal duty to know all of this and act accordingly.

She only had the rabbit put down after the neighbour insisted she see a vet.

None of this is okay, and the RSPCA and legal authorities would take a very dim view of it, unlike a lot of people

Sorry about the comparing to children, yes, in hindsight maybe a bit over the top, but I still think someone who owns and cares for a rabbit should pick them up and care for them when they're ill. You might not want to pick up a sick animal, but you should be prepared to take that risk if you own it...bunnies aren't always cute and fluffy, hence the shelters being full at the moment

SoupDragon · 17/08/2009 17:00

But she didn't put it back in the hutch and she did have it put down.

picmaestress · 17/08/2009 18:35

Lying about the rabbit being ill for a few days is really vile, the OP makes it clear she had no intention of dealing with a very sick and in bunny. And for what it's worth, that is now against the law, so I'm not sure what you're getting at SoupDragon, or am I missing your point?

But seeing as she only did the right thing when someone else intervened and the vet won't have got the truth, she's off the hook legally, yeah, you're right. If no-one sees the cruelty, it didn't happen right? Right, kids?

staffylover · 17/08/2009 23:25

katiestar You and DH sound nice people!

SoupDragon · 18/08/2009 08:52

"I'm not sure what you're getting at SoupDragon"

The fact that she did take it to the vets and had it put down. There is nothing to report.

If she had left it in the hutch and gone away, of course that should be reported but she didn't.

"If no-one sees the cruelty, it didn't happen right? Right, kids? "

Nonsense. That's not what I said at all. Take your patronising tone elsewhere.

SoupDragon · 18/08/2009 08:53

The OP ignored her concerns about the rabbit on previous occasions. Perhaps if the rabbit is replaced, she should reconsider that lack of action.

junglist1 · 18/08/2009 09:35

Definetely if the cow does get another pet watch her like a hawk

katiestar · 18/08/2009 18:12

Staffylover - why ? do you think the rabbit would know anything about it ? I wouldn't pay £45 for a vet to do the same thing we could I could do ourselves for nowt
