What and how much exercise do you do on a weekly basis?

I am interested in this. I run 4 times a week, swim once a week and sometimes go on a cross trainer in the evening if I have time.

Exercise is a huge part of my life. Out of all the women I know, apart from my sister, not one of them goes to a gym or swimming or anything really. I just wondered what people on here do? If you do exercise, why do you do it?, if you don't why don't you do it?

I think I do it because my dad was in the army and then I was and being fit was a big part of that. It helps with my depression too. Just nosy and interested in other peoples exercise habits really.

50 squats after each trip to the loo.

30 press ups on the top stairs each time I go upstairs.

50 sit-ups each morning and 50 each night before bed.

Works wonders.

Brisk dog walking for cardio.

I run two or three times a week (approx 3.5-5km per run) but I run more often and longer distances if I am training for a race e.g. 10k.

I also do Body Pump two or three times a week. This is usually straight after my run so, although it might sound like a lot to fit in, it is actually only two evening sessions and one at the weekend. I also cycle a bit.

If I get bored of the running and classes, I'll do something else for a while; most recently, trampolining!

I exercise because it keeps me fit, strong and slim and it means I can eat more ;D Plus it gives me time away from the children doing something for myself and it relieves stress and gives me a buzz. It improves my energy levels, yet helps me sleep better.

Having said that, I was a complete non-exerciser for more than 10 years and that was before I had the children, so I really had no excuse other than laziness.

Starting exercising was SO hard but I noticed results very quickly; it really is worth the effort. So, to those of you who are struggling to get started with it; tell yourself you DESERVE it! You deserve to feel and look good and it will give your self-esteem a big boost. If I can become a fit and healthy person, anyone can.

Ideally I run 3 or 4 times a week. Usually around 22 miles all told.

ATM I have a bad foot and I am sulking

DrNortherner · 14/08/2009 22:36

I attend armed forces fitness twice a week, have a bike which i like to go out on for a blast a couple of times a week, we also have a spin bike at home whih i use if i can't get out on a real bike! Oh we own a vey active black lab so i walk him lots too.

OrmIrian · 14/08/2009 22:39

With regard to why, because it helps keep weight under control and everything toned, it helps with my mental health, it gives me space away from work and family.

And until my late 20s I did nothing (apart from walking quite a bit)

whyme2 · 14/08/2009 22:40

I do loads of walking when the kids are at school but in the hols - nothing really.
I am a gym member but dh has been too poorly tio look after the dc's lately so I haven't been. He is getting better so I am looking forward to going again.

DrNortherner · 14/08/2009 22:41

Forgot my why bit! I love armed force fitness training - i have definatley found my thing! I feel great afterwards, keeps me fit and slim and i don't have to worry about what i eat.

TheDMHatesMe · 14/08/2009 22:49

I like deadflesh's routine. I might start doing some squats and sit ups.

I have started running twice a week - on the days that DD stays overnight at her dad's. I'm doing the couch potato to 5k programme and am really enjoying it so far.

I also walk for about 1 hour two or three times a week.

Why? Would like to be slimmer and not worry about what I eat. Running was the exercise I enjoyed most at school, it's free, and I can do it anytime - which is important as I'm a single parent and work FT.

SixtyFootDoll · 15/08/2009 08:50

i do it because ilove feeling fit and healthy.
I cannot diet i love my food.
So exercise keeps the weight off.
And it is my TIME!
Cannot wait for kids to goback to school so I can get back into it

Your'e all making me feel VERY tired....!

pjmama · 15/08/2009 09:42

So tired, I can't even get my apostrophes in the right place

nickelbabe · 15/08/2009 09:46

i do bellydancing twice a week.
each class is an hour and a half.
it's really great fun and very sociable (i'm goingto sound like an advert for belly dancing now.... )
our class is mixed ability and we have ladies of all shapes and sizes. it's really boosted my confidence too.

debs40 · 15/08/2009 09:52

I go to the gym about 4 times a week for about 45 mins. It can be a struggle sometimes as I have the two kids and I work from home and study too so I end up going at odd times.

It does make me feel sooooo much better to go.

Has anyone else found that weight gradually keeps on as you get older? I'm 41 and half put on half a stone within the last year although I can't see much else has changed within my life style. I must be getting gradually more sedentary.

I wish I could fit more walking into the day. I'm always rushing everywhere with school/nursery drop-offs and collections and never have time to spare just to walk! That is the best way of keeping fit without too much effort!

readbtweenthelines · 15/08/2009 09:53

You can actually get away with 5 minutes of intense exercise 4 x day to get amazing benefits and lose weight. Anyone can fit 5 minutes into their day.

As long as you eat clean. I do 5 minutes go crazy, quite out of puff by the end of it but it feels great when my hear rate has returned to normal.

Only problem wth this approach is can get a bit sweaty. Could be a problem for some depending on their daily schedules

foxinsocks · 15/08/2009 09:55

very very little but I am desperately trying to increase it

with full time work, an average commute (london wise I reckon), I just run out of time and quite frankly, would rather see the kids

on the weekend, dh is working so then I feel like exercising but find it hard to fit in with the kids around (I mean proper exercising - I can take them swimming and cycling but I don't get to properly exercise while this happens!).

landrover · 20/08/2009 11:46

none!

paranoidmother · 20/08/2009 11:53

I do walking or swimming at least twice a week for an hour with a friend, then about half an hour to 1.5 hours on Wii fit step program about 4-5 days a week and sometimes an extra 30 minutes of yoga/muscle tone a couple of times a week depending on time.
I've been doing it for 4 months now and have felt so much better doing it and felt awful when i've missed some exercise. It's also meant i've lost 2 stone so far as well which is even better, nearly the same amount as my 2yr DS.

Nancy66 · 20/08/2009 11:56

I run four times a week - five if I can manage it.

I prob clock up about 25 miles a week.

Sometimes I have to really make myself go but once I'm out there I love it and feel amazing afterwards. I don't do anything else - no weighs, no sit ups. I just run.

The key is finding a form of exercise that you love, there's no point in forcing yourself to do something you hate. I could never be couped up in a gym with a load of lycra clad bunnies. Would hate it, I need to be outside.

The payoff is that I can eat very well and not gain weight.

simplesusan · 20/08/2009 12:13

I try and go to the gym/exercise class 4/5 times a week.
Used to run once a week but this has dropped off and need to start again.

Helps keep me slim and fit and it gives me time to unwind/relax.
