kathy - you're not a computer programmer are you ?

Fimbo · 14/08/2009 11:01

We don't have one at my surgery. Bet we get it next week now.

blueshoes · 14/08/2009 11:53

Isitmeor, my experience with computer programmers (I am not one though work with them on occasion) is that they can use deep deep IT jargon, yes some from microsoft, but 'arrive me' is just wrong on so many levels.

kathyis6incheshigh · 14/08/2009 11:56

I am not a computer programmer
But I would like someone to suggest an alternative. 'Register my arrival' is a bit wordy. Surely 'arrive me' is perfectly clear even if it is (ahem) wrong?

GentleOtter · 14/08/2009 11:57

Our health centre removed the computerised appointment screen in case anyone with swine flu sneezed all over it.
All the magazines have gone as well.

OrmIrian · 14/08/2009 11:59

I prefer ours. Much quicker than queueing up to speak to the real human being But I agree that 'arrive me' is seriously awful and Something Should Be Done!

CatHerder · 14/08/2009 12:05

If the screen says

You are Mrs A B
CD1 34E

Then the button only needs to say

YES

and then after you have pressed it say

Thank you, please take a seat, the wait will be xx minutes

or something like that

CatHerder · 14/08/2009 12:07

We don't have one. We have a small surgery where you arrive and sit down, and the not-at-all-grumpy receptionist spots you, recognises you, and ticks you off her list.

Oblomov · 14/08/2009 12:08

Our says "confirmed"
"Please take a seat"
Maybe they should try that ....

OhYouBadBadDailyMail · 14/08/2009 12:11

Ours now has an alcohol gel next to it. I'm not sure if I am supposed to use the gel before using so as not to spread my germs (and will that bugger up the screen?) or after so I don't get others germs.

Bit like gels by hospital doors. Do I use it going in, or coming out and when they are on both sides of the door which one do I use for going in and which one for coming out? Perhaps even both....?

Makes going through a hospital door quite a puzzling experience nowadays.

CloudDragon · 14/08/2009 13:04

no YANBU at all for some reason it makes me want to go arrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh everytime. It is gramtically irritating!

WetAugust · 14/08/2009 18:04

I'm the OP and for over 20 years I was a computer programmer - which is probably why I do find "Arrive me" intensely irritating.

Yes, it is provbably software that was developed in some far off shores by someone who did not have English as their first language - but that's not the issue; the issue is that our NHS procuremnet department thought it was acceptable- which it is not.

When we developed software we at least checked with the customer that it met their requirements and debugged evrything on their snagging lists - before releasing it for use.

I think ours says "Sign In". Arrive me is awful YANBU

LovelyTinOfSpam · 14/08/2009 18:26

The alcohol gel is next to the screen for drinking, to deaden the horror of being confronted with the "arrive me" message.

cheshirekitty · 14/08/2009 19:24

I use the touch screen, have never had a problem with it.

And we do not have grumpy receptionists. Ours are lovely.

landrover · 19/08/2009 19:28

totally agrree

icedgemsrock · 19/08/2009 19:43

At our surgery if you dare to queue for the receptionist she just points to the machine!!

Arrive me - clearly it should be Me arrive - much better english

Habbibu · 19/08/2009 19:52

Never heard of this - are you all in England? Arrive me is vile, though...

lol...yanbu

is there one next to "arrive me" that says "now 'effing tell me whats wrong and give me something for it"?

before you hit the "ill be on my way then, me" button.

foreverchanges · 19/08/2009 20:53

yabu totally

Tinfoil · 19/08/2009 23:15

YANBU. "Sign in" would be much clearer.

GrimmaTheNome · 19/08/2009 23:51

I think ours says Sign in - certainly not 'arrive me', I'd have noticed. I think its quite clever, requesting minimal information to identify you. I've watched older people using it and they don't seem fazed at all.

landrover · 20/08/2009 13:21

they are great
