To expose a VIP Venue in London's West End for blatant racism

I run a company that does guest lists for West end nightclubs, Last Wednesday I was asked to run the Guest list on the door ( check off names as they come in) of one of the clubs.

Whilst I was working away 3 Asian males came to the door that were on the Guest list and the Head doorman refused them entry. When they had gone I questioned the doorman as to why they weren't allowed in as they appeared well dressed and were not drunk.

This was his reply

We don't like to many of that sort in the club Asians are well known for trouble.

He then went on to say that if I wished to run a in house guest list ( I run a guest list for someone else currently) I was able to do that.
I would get paid 75% of the door for white people but if there are Blacks or Asians I would only get 50% and that if my list consists of too many Asian or Black names they wouldn't except it as they only allow a certain amount of Blacks and Asians into the club because they are all trouble and the Manager doesn't want to encourage Blacks to come in the club.

He then said another promoter submitted a list with over 50 Asian names on it and the Manager threw the list away and told the doorman to refuse entry to them when they came down.

He continued his rant about how much trouble Black people were and how he had thrown out a member of a group called So Solid crew because he was black the person he was referring to happened to be one of my friends.

Whilst he was ranting away at me about who I should promote to etc there stood a black doorman who looked like he wanted to kick the shit out of him.

I was disgusted at the clubs attitude towards other races. I told the manager and the doorman that I will no longer associate my company with a venue that allows people in dependent on there race and judges people because of the color of there skin. I then collected my money and left.

I can't believe in 2009 people still believe that all Black People are trouble and Asians. When will people realize that if someone is trouble its because down to them as an individual not down to the color of there skin.

I just want to know if I should take this information to the papers as the club itself is famous in London for celebs going in there and appears in The tabloids quite alot

Glad you got that post deleted. I asked for mine to go to... but it's been left on. Obviously not very libellous(!)

Have you contacted any one yet?

Perhaps not the Daily Mail...

SolidGoldBrass · 11/08/2009 21:01

Some names do give a reasonably strong indication of the likely ethnic background of a person. You won't get many Morag McDonalds turning out to be Polish, for instance.

pingping · 12/08/2009 09:28

I am going to contact the papers today I have managed to get hold of another promoter that works there who was told the same thing by the manager.

But exposure for sure is needed as its not on.

Pingy i agree you should expose them, but be careful my love, good on you for withdrawing your company from promoting them

ilovesprouts · 12/08/2009 09:52

id be very careful if i was you as,this could go very wrong and backfire big time on you

cancantcan · 12/08/2009 10:28

I agree with all of the above, its a disgrace in this day and age that anyone be judged by the colour of their skin.
Pick a reputable paper who will do watertight investigation and get this exposed. Be careful, and well done for standing up for what you believe.

pingping · 12/08/2009 10:37

I have just spoken to a someone they are going to look into it and ivestigate it.

Well done, Ping.

Saltire · 12/08/2009 11:45

Sorry this is probably a dim question, but
what exactly does running a guest list involve/mean?

chegirl · 12/08/2009 13:32

well done ping

My DP was a bouncer door supervisor for years. He was apparently good enough to get punched, kicked, spat on etc but not good enough to pay money to get in some tacky club (lets face it they are pretty much all tacky).

Hasnt it always been this way?

As for why a club would employ/encourage Asian promoters and Black bouncers but not want them as customers? Well they are fine in their place arnt they? God forbid they would want to function outside of their steryotype hey?

pingping · 12/08/2009 15:03

Saltire I basically promote the night and the club I collect names of people that wish to attend the Event/club and Submit run the guest list all the people that go into the club under my company name I then get a percentage of the door money so for the club in OP I would usually make on average £350-500 a week as I was doing a Guest list for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday there.

Chegirl agreed. Maybe it has always been that way but its time that changed I run a guest list for over 35 West End Clubs and major events this is the first club that has had a race policy or have been so open about it.

Loool @ Tacky clubs yep most are but London do have some nice venues. This club is a nice venue but its over priced over rated and crap music.

Well done ping. That is absolutely disgraceful. Now i understand why some black and Asian people complain of racism. It this happens at a night club, imagine where else this may happen.

FAQtothefuture · 12/08/2009 21:13

SGB - yes some do - but certainly not all.

I was very confused when trying to learn the names of 35-40 boys in various classes in Zimbabwe that a call of the register for

Smith, Paul - would get a "yes miss" - from a black kid

and a Simba Maputo - would be answered by a white kid.

A few years back here in the UK I phoned on behalf of DH to get an application form for the local police force. I (!) received a letter telling me that they were not currently recruiting but the ethnic minority department (or something along those line s- can't remember the exact name) would be pleased to here from me when they were recruiting again.

pingping · 13/08/2009 12:22

FAQ thats the problem they just assume a race via there name rather silly really. I know lots of Asian/ Black people with standard names. I also know white people with exotic names.

OP posts:
SolidGoldBrass · 13/08/2009 14:27

I said 'some' names - of course it's not a universal indicator of ethnic origin. SO a racist club promotor might well go 'No funny foreign names on the list' and still end up with a mixture of people in the club of course.

Media86 · 15/04/2013 20:16

Did anything ever happen with this as I see this kind of thing every weekend at clubs around London.
