To think that Tesco ought to have a trolley I can use?

I have a 2.5 year old and am pregnant. My son is big for his age, and heavy, so I can't lift him up, let alone put him in a trolley (I don't even want to think about getting him out). He's a good boy but it would be a nightmare trying to go round with him walking.

So at the moment I have to go to Tesco without him which means going in the evening, which is a real pain.

Their customer service took all my details 2 months ago and I haven't heard a thing.

Am I unreasonable thinking they ought to have a trolley that children can climb in themselves, with some kind of harness that comes down over their head like on a rollercoaster? (That was my idea!) I can't be the only pregnant woman with a small child going to Tesco? AIBU? Should I take it further?

They wouldn't last long as they would be stolen.

We went to Ikea a couple of years ago and asked where all the trolleys with the moulded baby seats were. The answer, every one had been stolen and they had ordered some more, which hadn't arrived yet.

FedUpWithRainyDevon · 07/08/2009 15:06

That sounds good FluffyBunny, thanks!

There's no need to make life hard for yourself.

Waitrose cakes are soooo nice, they are quite expensive though so maybe as a treat (for you)!

Fed up, Are you giving us the whole story?? Your posts indicate that you are anxious regarding this pregnancy, have you problems, as you said nearer term you wouldn't mind lifting your son( this is generally when it becomes a problem for others)Sorry If I am being nosey, but I get the feeling you are being a bit precious for reasons you have not let on.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 07/08/2009 15:17

Have you tried Ocado?? It's all waitrose stuff.

I get some free money if I get friends to sign up. I'm not doing this now as I don't know any of you so am saying how great they are for free!

I have a voucher, spend over £90 this week (which I won't) and go into a draw to win an iphone.

MrsBadger · 07/08/2009 15:17

Our Tesco deliveries are generally great, and when they're not they make up for it quiet well - once they brought no bread, not even a substitute, just none at all
so I rang and complained immediately and they refunded my delivery charge with absolutely no quibble.

FedUp, has ds a trike with a parent handle?

NB we are 'supportive of something that would help other mums do their shopping' but we are also realists not to say cynics . A fair number of us are also pregnant and heaving our own whopping 2yo about. It's not that we don't feel your pain, but that we don't expect Tesco to solve it for us...

No that's fair enough Mrs Badger and I guess I wasn't expecting everyone including Tesco to solve my problem - but I thought maybe if I complained and had any backing from other mums maybe it would get changed, but I guess I'm being naive. If you're in the same position but see no need for a different type of trolley then maybe I am more crazy than I realised.

I will give the delivery another go, maybe they've improved over the last 2 years since I did it when DS was first born.

Stillnorks, I'm not particularly precious I don't think, but seeing as the general advice is not to lift anything above 20lbs, it seems a bit risky to lift twice that up to shoulder height. Again it wasn't just for me, I just thought that a fair few women might benefit from it in the future but perhaps I am just barking mad.

Fluffy, just tried Ocado but they don't deliver down here yet.

where does it say don't lift things above 20lb?
[shuffles pg notes worriedly]

tbh a bag of shopping containing eg 2l milk, carton juice, packet of saus and a bag of apples weighs more than 10lb, so if you have a bag in each hand should you be shopping at all?

I don't know where I got that 20lb guidance from now - I know someone told me so I'm thinking it was my midwife, but I can't find any further advice. Maybe I am being too precious then...sounds like everyone thinks so!

second pregnancies are very different to first ones, aren't they? Last time everyone treated me (and indeed I behaved) as if I was a combination of a Dresden china doll and the Princess and the Pea - nothing was too much trouble, everything had to be just right, I bought organic porridge and hand-baked artisan bread and unsalted organic butter so I could have healthy nourishing breakfasts in bed to combat morning sickness etc.

this time I just about wolf a bowl of shreddies standing up in the kitchen, loading the dryer with one hand, wrestling dd into her coat with the other and shouting to DH that we are out of milk and can he put a nappy wash on before he goes to work...

HighOnDieselAndGasoline · 07/08/2009 16:11

Could you ask another parent to lift your DS into the trolley?

FedUpWithRainyDevon · 07/08/2009 16:33

According to everyone else I ought to be doing it myself so I guess I will! I have obviously been over cautious and maybe there is no issue here at all, sounds like I have been unreasonable.

My SIL gets her DP to go with her to lift her DD into trolley and sometimes she writes the list and he goes off to do shop without her. Maybe they are unusual? Not sure she always likes what he brings home if she's not there but at least they have food in and it saves her lifting DD or in fact heavy shoppin!

Also they have a good family network so can always drop DD to us and we have ehr while they shop.

Hope delivery is better for you

FedUpWithRainyDevon · 07/08/2009 17:00

I try to avoid roping DH into it as he's at work all week so easier for me just to get the shopping during the week. Plus DS actually likes coming round (most of the time) so I guess I'll just suck it up and lift him in. Might have to get some help to get him out tho with his long legs - he always gets stuck!

YANBU, it's a pain in the arse trying to get a long or heavy child in a trolley particularly if you are short (like me) or heavily pregnant (like me!) I have thought about asking a member of staff to lift DS in but I thought it might breach their H&S to "handle" a child. I do ask them to hold the trolley still for me to stop DS kicking it away either by accident or on purpose. Putting him into a buggy means you can't do a big shop as you can only fit to baskets on the handles at best. I could let him walk around with me but that's pretty stressful in itself and he's not generally one to run away but gets in the way of other trolleys or people, sometimes through no fault of his own.

I have tried internet shopping but not had much success.

I vote for lower trolleys for short, round people.

Fanjita · 07/08/2009 17:03

two

juuule · 07/08/2009 17:09

Never heard of the 20lb thing.
Just lifted mine in when I went shopping.
If it's causing you a problem maybe you could ask a member of staff to lift your dc in for you as someone else suggested.

Tiredmumno1 · 07/08/2009 17:35

I agree with highondiesel, if a pregnant person approached me and asked, i would happily lift the child in. ''every little helps'' after all lol

bamboo · 07/08/2009 18:01

Oh, this thread makes such a nice change from the AIBU's where an OP posts a question, everyone decides that they ABU, yet the OP still bangs on about how they are right. My favourite of that genre is the Supersoaker at a Party episode!

So FedUpWithRainyDevon YABU but good on you for taking on board other opinions and accepting it with good grace .
