to think that workhouses definitely have a place in today's society?

if people are poor, it's their fault.

if they just worked hard they wouldn't be in such a state of penury.

'the poor' by definition are lazy and feckless.

and those who won't fit in the workhouse definitely require some indoctrination!

they should never be allowed indoor plumbing, central heat, food other than rice and pulses or toilet paper.

this will inspire them to achieve more.

We wopuld endup homeless if we claimed HB

because of the lease (not the landlord she doesn't care, and no mortgage, we've paid ourselves for years- just the letting agents rules)

But becuase we can't cl;aimthe HB that £600 pm has to come from somewhere, so its the everything else budget- OK atm as that's what redundancy funded, will be a significant PITA in the coming months though. Supposed to be part helped by dh's student income but they messe3d it up and ony awarded him basic loan so that won't be done in time

I work in a homeless day shelter - yes some people are there because they have 'put themselves' there, and whinge about it from morning till night - most aren't. I did a session with the street outreach team the other night and travelled around the city looking for rough sleepers. I saw things that I never want my kids to experience. It is heart breaking. Could go on for hours but I won't, as it's a huge, emotive and contentious subject.

so true coolma..when you haven't experienced somethings in life it's very easy to be judgemental..you know this is a jokey thread right?

GrimmaTheNome · 06/08/2009 16:57

Why don't we all just go and re-read our Dickens, who did satire on poorhouses better than we can - with true internal rage that they existed in his day.

coolma · 06/08/2009 17:42

Yes, of course I do just thought I'd be serious for a sec!

bronze · 06/08/2009 17:45

this is so going in the dm column without the tongue in cheek

Mumcentreplus · 06/08/2009 17:47

Phew just checking coolma did'nt want you to get upset!

theyoungvisiter · 06/08/2009 19:28

Bronze, you are so right. It will be the starting point for a Daily Moan poll:

98% of posters on the popular "munsmet" website say BRING BACK THE WORKHOUSE.

53% believe that the children of the unemployed should be used to recuperate taxpayers losses, by employing them in traditional roles suited to their size such as chimney sweeps.

12% actually advocate the slaughter and consumption of the homeless.

WHAT DO DAILY MOAN READERS THINK? Are these harsh measures what's needed to shake up Slacker Britain? Or have these mums gone too far to protect their Hard Working Families?

Text us now with your view (texts cost only £13.50 from most landlines, cost from mobiles may be significantly more, T&C apply)
