To be fair we are going on a very long journey next week (driving to South of France) so DH has bought this in order to keep DS entertained, however I think he already spends too much time on the Wii, and would rather he made his own entertainment. He already has a DVD player for the journey. So AIBU?

oops I meant you are NOT being unreasonable to be cross

Cross that he has made a decision about his own child without consulting you? Or cross that it's a lot of family money to spend without consulting you.

If it's the first, YABU - if the second, not.

When I was a kid (30) years ago,
mum & dad took us all over Europe in the car. We always went to my aunties house just as we set off and she would give us each a carrier bag with felt tip pens, a colouring book, puzzle book, fun bag of sweets (only time we had sweets) and some fruit. We played with our stuff, read the map to plan the journey or see where we were and occasionly talked to each other and our parents!!
The only thing I remember getting fed up about was my mum trying to play endless games of eye spy. I may be old fasioned too but I dont think YABU. I think the journey can also be part of the holiday. Poor me, I am now married to someone who can't even cope with the half hour drive to the lake district!

I was planning on buying a DS for DS1 who is 5.5yrs as a Christmas present.
We have a Wii but use it probably once a week at most, as a family. We don't have it set up all the time so the DS's can't play it all the time.
He has a Leapster (which will then become DS2's, who is 3.5) which is used a few times a week max.

I think it is a sensible choice. The main reason we are getting DS1 a DS is because next year we want to do a Eurocamp/Keycamp style holiday and it will be good to keep them entertained.

Out of interest, did your DH get a good deal on it?? (cheeky emoticon)

I can see that if he bought it with no discussion that it would be annoying, we are not in the financial position where DH could spend £100 on a DS without first discussing it with me tbh. We budget for CHristmas/Birthdays etc.
If you are worried just ration all games usage (DS and Wii) once you are home.
