To be secretly thrilled that DD is turning strawberry blonde?

minouminou · 27/07/2009 13:49

Just like DS, she was born with thick black hair, but the roots are now growing out reddish-blonde (DS is blond with no hint of red).
DP is ginger strawberry blond, and is appalled by this turn of events, although he consoles himself with "At least chicks can get away with it a bit more".
I'm quite delighted, and keep checking her roots to see if it's coming on a bit more - I think it's fab.
I should just tell DP to get over the years of gingerist abuse he's suffered at the hands of friends, family and random strangers, shouldn't I?

Ah but AnnieMac you need the ginger gene on both sides iirc in order to produce a ginger child. Which is why they are so verrrrry special

walkingwomb · 28/07/2009 10:26

Excuse me - how could not not have listed Paul Bettany here yet!

I have a beautiful dark haired DD but she has lots of red through it (DH was red). I would love her to go red.

Even 2 ginger carrier parents are not guaranteed to have a ginger baby.

I'm not a genetics expert but afaik both parents have to pass the ginger gene to the child. So if genetically parents were Dad Brown gene & Red Gene and Mum was Blonde gene & Red Gene. They could pass on the following combinations

Br & Bl

Br & R

Bl & R

R & R

Only the R&R combination will produce ginger hair in the child.

Obviously genetics are much more complicated than that and I'm sure there'll be someone along soon wh will correct me! But I'm fairly sure that those are the basics

However, if child was born with Br & R genes then they could have ginger descendants as long as they continue to pass the R gene through the generations. Hence why you can get a ginger 'throwback' when there has been no livig memory of a person with red hair in the family.

SausageRocket · 28/07/2009 10:34

Br & R was an example, obviously it could be anycolour & R

midnightexpress · 28/07/2009 10:35

Well you never know AnnieMac: DP is Jewish and also very dark and we've ended up with one blue-eyed redhead and one blue-eyed blond. I think his dad had reddish hair so he obvously carried the gene. Plus my strong Viking genes, of course.

Ain't genetics movillis?

minouminou · 28/07/2009 12:59

Wow, thanks, guys. Lots of ammo there.
I recently asked an American acquaintance who has red hair if she'd noticed the British attitude towards gingers, and her response was "Oh my gosh what is UP with you guys?!!!"
She's never seen anything like it, and an elderly Irish neighbour and her three children - all ginger - were shocked to the core by it "The minute we stepped off the ferry" (in the 1950's).
A lot of our friends have said they think it's great, but DP's convinced they're just being polite and covering up their real feelings at the abomination that is.....a ginger child.
I don't care....I'm with a few of you lot who've said they like ginger/strawberry blond/blond men.
We're in the minority, but we're not ashamed of it.

I actually think that the anti-ginger movement is coming to an end. I haven't seen or heard anything in the press lately about how revolting and freaky we are. I know it's all a bit more deep seated than what the press has to say but i think it is pretty positive.

As an aside I think it is quite common to get red-headed arabs, we saw quite a few in egypt.

simplesusan · 28/07/2009 13:21

I think there is still a lot of predjudice about ginger hair. Probably worse for males.

My dh peed himself laughing when his brother and wife had a ginger haired child. I could never understand the hilarity.

minouminou · 28/07/2009 13:28

I think there's been a few red-haired models in recent years, as well as various actresses - and even actors (gasp), so I also think it's coming to an end.
I think DP is still traumatised by his trip to Israel and Egypt many moons ago, where he and his cascading locks were followed by hordes of children who thought he was Mick Hucknall.

I have red hair and there was a heck of alot of prejudice when I was growing up; from strangers, my own family (all brown haired) etc. Now that I'm in my early thirties, all of the secret red lovers have come out and like me, rather like my hair.

I still laugh at my shockingly socially inept SIL telling me that the doesn't know what she would have done if one of her children had been born with red hair. Ebay perhaps?

SarfEast · 28/07/2009 14:12

It really is shocking how rude people are about it isn't it. The amount of people who have come up to me and asked me what coulour my pubes are not so much now since I started wearing crotchless trousers but when i was a teenager, before I even knew what a minge was!

minoumiou poor DP being likened to mick hucknall - that's gotta hurt

midnightexpress · 28/07/2009 15:47

But only for his mickhucknallishness rather than his gingerosity, sarfeast.

sleeplessinstretford · 28/07/2009 16:03

the gene is called the Weasley gene (the ginger one)my dp has a ginger beard (and dark dark hair) so i do hope they mingle and we get a ginner next time...

allaboutme · 28/07/2009 16:09

i'm a ginger but neither of my boys have got the ginger gene. they are both white blond like their dad.
my dh only went out with me cos of my ginger hair. he's got a thing for redheads.
i've met a few men the same too

midnightexpress · 28/07/2009 16:12

Ah, they may not have ginger hair and still have a ginger gene, so you could still end up with ginger grandchildren!

ChristieF · 28/07/2009 16:13

I love red hair. Absolutely the most beautiful colours. That dark foxy red. The spun gold of the strawberry blonde. I'm dark and my son is strawberry blonde and wavy. I never want him to cut it but he does. It's the hair angels would have. All the different coloured threads running through it. Look at pre-Raphaelite Fizz's hair on Coronation Street. Not for ordinary people.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 28/07/2009 16:14

DS1 is bright ginger and I love it. I can always spot him straight away in a crowd and school class photos

I am pale gingery brown, much less obvious as I'm getting older and the grey is taking over

I have also been asked in my younger days what colour my pubic hair is. I'm still embarrassed when I have smears and internals

I was a bit disappointed when Ds2 came out dark. He's now pale brown but he's never going to be ginger.

sleeplessinstretford · 28/07/2009 16:18

i must admit that i am glad that even though i am more of a ginner than anything else i always had eyelashes/eyebrows/pubes that were dark-i don't know why this makes a big difference but it does...
