not being funny if she is old enough to have an adult relationship she is old enough to support herself .

OrangeFish · 25/07/2009 10:41

True, if she wants an adult life, she must act like a responsible adult and support herself.

My parents stop giving me any money from the moment I got my first part time job while I was a student. Although I resented it back then, in retrospective I can see it did me the world of good. There was no boyfriend in the horizon at the time BTW

Why would she need to buy toileteries if you're only going away for 1 week? How much soap and shampoo does 1 teenager need? I bet she has cupboards full of assorted toileteries. If the house contains enough food for the first few days and she's earning money then why would you give her extra?
Teenagers can only accept no responsibiliries if you fail to give her any. Good luck to the boyfriend.
When I was studying my parent supported me during term time, but during the summer holidays I was expected to work for spending money for clothes/ nights out and not given any money. I've bought my own toiletries since the age of 18 but have never thought of that as a major expense. If my parents were away and I wanted more/ different food I was expected to buy it.

She's 18 and not finished school yet?

mumeeee · 25/07/2009 19:09

If she is working and getting paid than you don't ned to leave her any money. She has food and she should be paying for her own toiletries with her own money.

Okay so Im a too soft mum

but im suprised that as soon as your child has a serious realtionship that a mum is not needed.

Maybe living in Austria has shown me that a Mother always helps .....maybe too much in many occasions here

YABU. When I was 13 my parents went away for a few days and left me with no money. I got my period and had no money for tampons. Imagine how that made me feel!
