To loathe Britain in Bloom and all the hideous hanging baskets everywhere?

I think they look vile and are a waste of money.

Everywhere seems to have the same look - I drove through Taunton and Barnstaple at the weekend, they both had hideous displays of hanging baskets and topiary thingies, all with the same flowers (bright pink and red busy lizzes, geraniums, lobelia). It makes everywhere look the same.

It's just such a waste of time. These things will be dead by the end of the summer. I know councils have a budget for gardens, but why can't they spend it on year round plants and trees, not the creation of these crappy hanging baskets. The cost of their erection (oo-err missus) and watering must be high as well.

Or am I a miserable old caaa?

Never saw the 3 piece suite Silverten, but I always see the topiary 'St. George on a horse killing a Dragon' when back in Doncaster visiting family.

Now live in Milton Keynes where we ahve no hanging baskets but a lot of manicured roundabouts. I think baskets are nice though - MK could do with some more colour

Odd tail on that Gilbert

Oh, I love lobelia. Unkillable. You must hate France then if you hate geraniums. Thye'll plant them in anything - old Evian bottles.

Ozziegirly · 22/07/2009 13:27

My mum surreptitiously scatters seeds around the village she lives in.

SetSquare · 22/07/2009 13:28

lol, does she drop them out of her pockets like in the "Great escape"

Heidi28 · 22/07/2009 13:30

Ozziegirly Love your Mum's approach!

Ozziegirly · 22/07/2009 13:34

I think that's exactly how she does it SetSquare.

My parents have a really lovely garden and mum always has seeds left over. I think it started as seeds had migrated from their front garden to the verge outside, and people would stop and comment on how nice it was.

But she is an unassuming sort so wouldn't dream of doing it openly so resorts to these secret plantings.

The fair town of Forres can trump the lot of you. It has a frankly terrifying series of large floral and topiary animals, including a squirrel with a zimmer frame. They look likethe work of an insane parkie on a trip.

happywomble "When I was young we used to go to Wales on hols and my mother always complained that there were no hanging baskets there!! "

My aforementioned Uncle lived in Wales, definitely plenty of hanging baskets in Monmouth.

midnightexpress · 22/07/2009 13:39

He seems to have lost his zimmer. Perhaps that's a different one.

But the eyes worry me.

katiestar · 22/07/2009 13:39

I actually love flowers of any and every description. However I do know what you mean about gaudy pink and red baskets. They always seem to go overboard on the busy lizzies and geraniums and petunias IMO (like Lobelia though)
Actually I think hanging baskets look most effective with just one type of plant in them either in an understated colour or so that you can at least see a fair bit of greenery.I have got a basket with some silvery petunias in and that looks very effective

SetSquare · 22/07/2009 13:40

the eye are odd.
fark me he has a facebook page

ZZZenAgain · 22/07/2009 13:40

SetSquare · 22/07/2009 13:42

ProfYaffle · 22/07/2009 13:47

I'll have nightmares about that sodding squirrel!

ZZZenAgain · 22/07/2009 13:48

SetSquare · 22/07/2009 13:49

snort, its not its best side

GentleOtter · 22/07/2009 13:54

midnightexpress - I forgot about Forres and how they win each year. The colours are like acid on acid.

seaturtle · 22/07/2009 13:58

ZZZen, they used to put their toilet certificates on the wall, next to the hand dryers.

That squirrel is disturbing!
