To expect Tesco to employ staff with slightly more social skills than a demented toddler

Did quite a big shop today with children in tow. I was happily packing my own shopping when a female member of staff came up to our check-out and seemed intent on having a gossipy/flirty conversation with the male cashier. I did not really object to this as long as it wasn't slowing the process down. Then the girl offered to help me with the packing, i think more as a means to legitimately carrying on her conversation than anything else. All well and good. Then she notices the rather large scar I have that runs the length of my upper arm, where I had to have a plate fitted after a rather nasty break. She yelps really loudly and exclaims "Oh my god, what happened to your arm? Ugh it's disgusting!". Infront of my children. Now luckily I am not actually that sensitive about the scar but I was incredulous that someone could be so utterly lacking in social etiquette and intelligence that they think it is okay to say this kind of thing. If it wasn't for my children being there I would have called a fucking cretin and asked to speak to the manager. AIBU?

You should've said 'What, my scar? Oh, I got it whilst being restrained by the police for killing a rude shop assistant'

I was in, over priced very expensive, hair salon when a lady cam ein explaining this was her first time out since her operation (on her face she had had cancer) ad she was very nervous as she had a scar on her face. She explained that she has been house bound for some time. The hairdresser, rather young, said "Not being funny but don't come anywhere near me, that sort of thing makes me feel sick".

Ahhh...early twenties is def. old enough to know better - I thought she was about 16 from what she said.

I think you should complain OP. What a stupid and rude person! Posie, am gobsmacked by your story too!

Trikken · 22/07/2009 09:19

She was definately out of order. You should have complained to the manager as you just dont do that to a customer. Tho i do think your title is a little harsh, I work in tesco and I am lovely, and so are most of my colleagues, you obv get a few bad eggs but you will get that in any job, but you definately should have made a complaint about theis worker, if I had witnessed it i would have reported that person too.

I will complain about her. I have her name. When she said it I told her that she was very rude and that it was none of her business but didn't take it futher as the kids were with me. But next time i'm in on my own I will speak to someone.

Definitely complain to the manager. That is unacceptable coming from anyone over the age of 4!
