To drive at the speed limit, despite what the bloke right up behind me wants?

I often do a 20-mile trip on B-roads & through villages where the speed limits are 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60mph in various places. On two stretches there are speed cameras, and a few months back I got a warning letter for doing over 30 in a 30mph limit - don't know by how much, but I was lucky not to get a fine.

So I stick to the speed limits, even though IMO some are a bit daft - the 20mph is only relevant at school pick-up & drop-off really - but it's not for me to decide the law.

So why are there always cars - always BIG cars - right up my exhaust pipe trying to chivvy me up? It's SO stressful, why not just relax & go with the flow?

I havent said ys like that at all. I just use u and r. So what that isnt really that bad. At least u can read it. What the on earth r u picking for.

Thunderduck · 20/07/2009 19:37

Would typing you and are really be such a great effort for you?

Tiredmumno1 · 20/07/2009 19:41

I just like to wind U up cos U dont like it. So i think i may carry on, just to amuse myself

Tortington · 20/07/2009 19:41

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit when used by a fool, but when used by a wise man is a very useful weapon.

Rhubarb · 20/07/2009 19:43

Oh give her a break! None of you had a go at Cops typing, so why pick on her for her typing? Pick on her arguments yes, but it's pretty darn low to just have a go at the way she types. Smacks of you having no sensible retort to her pov.

And this isn't me defending her argument.

Tiredmumno1 · 20/07/2009 19:43

And yes before u say it. I feel like being immature, just so i can feel on same level as all the other immature mummies on here. It'd make a good one for jeremy kyle.

Rhubarb · 20/07/2009 19:44

Hello Custy! BTW, I am right and you are wrong!

Tiredmumno1 · 20/07/2009 19:52

I dont feel my argument is wrong, it is ok to overtake people, as that is not against the law (obviously particular roads you are not allowed to) i said nothing about speeding to do it though. Is my typing a bit better for you.

Thunderduck · 20/07/2009 19:53

The use of text speak isn't acceptable on the majority of forums.

All posters who use text speak in this forum are criticised.
Tiredmum isn't unique in that respect.

Rhubarb · 20/07/2009 19:55

Her arguments may be shite, but it's not too much of an effort to get what she is saying.

However Tiredmumno1, I think that if you were politer with your arguments people might have responded politely back. You are not making yourself very clear, so why don't you give us a brief summary of what it is you are saying exactly. Your last post says that overtaking is ok so long as you are not speeding, so far so good. But as you've touched a raw nerve with a lot of people I take it that this is not the only thing you've said?

hercules1 · 20/07/2009 19:58

Rhubarb - you are so patient and good!

Rhubarb · 20/07/2009 20:01

No Hercules, I just stop to think a bit more before I post these days! I have the scars of previous threads where I haven't!

MilleniumHandNShrimp · 20/07/2009 20:13

Tiredmum - sorry but you seem to have missed the point of the OP and most of the rest - they are talking about being tailgated when they are already doing the maximum speed allowed on the road in question. If your DP still tailgates and threatens in those circs then he is a twunt.

Tumbleweed · 20/07/2009 21:01

No probs with Tired's textspeak. Sorry, I mean I have no problem. Troubled by mrsrawlinson tho':

And to touch your brakes when someone is tailgating you, especially at high speed on the motorway, is extremely dangerous because if the twunt behind you slams on, it's the poor unsuspecting person behind who them is liable to end up face-first in their back windscreen.

If "poor unsuspecting person" has left minimum stopping distance, they won'd end up face first anywhere.

Are paintball guns legal on motorways? How about caltrops? Oil jets ..?

LittleMammaTo2 · 20/07/2009 21:21

Not getting into the text speak debate just wanted to say ARGH I hate those stupid twonks who drive up your bum when you're doing the max legal limit. Sometimes I pull over and let them pass but for the most part it just makes me want to drive slightly slower than the limit just to piss them off the little bit more.

I also take delight in taking their details if they are in a works vehicle (sometimes difficult to drive with 2 children in the car whilst reciting number plate details but I try my hardest. Such a saddo but I love getting letters back from companies telling me that they will be speaking to the driver about his unacceptable behaviour (am aware that they may well not ever speak to cruddy aggressive driver but not bothered)

MetalMummy · 20/07/2009 22:00

I only passed my driving test 6 weeks ago and if I get 6pts on my licence in the first 2 years I have to do my test again, so there is no way I am going to drive over the speed limit. I took 3 tests before I finally passed and I am not going through that again!!
Since passing my test I have come to the conclusion that there are a lot of numptys on the road!

I often drive slowly on windy country roads - I have a choice between getting there slowly or getting there with ds2 covered in vomit

2rebecca · 21/07/2009 14:43

If I have someone behind me I pull over, polite and less stressful. I hate people who pooter along for hours oblivious of huge queues behind them. Thy're usually doing well under the spewed limit though but just being selfish.
I do hate folk who come right behind me though and am less inclined to pull over for them for being such dangerous tossers.

GetOrfMoiCockroachCluster · 22/07/2009 10:12

Tailgaters I loathe. But I agree that to tap your brakes is insanity. Why risk a pile up? The wankers don't take any notice anyway and it just get's them more annoyed and unreasonable.

Coming down the M5 yesterday by Bristol in torrential rain, I was overtaking two side by side lorries (the spray was unbelieveable as you can imagine) and doing about 50, which I think was appropriate in the weather. I bloody great big tipper van came right up behind me, flashing his lights and hinking his horn, the bastard. I simply couldn't go any faster, it would have been dangerous, and obviously couldn't pull over due to the two (sodding) lorries.

However, in normal conditions I do admit that I do about 80-85 on motorways as it is normally the appropriate speed on the motorway, keeping up with the flow of traffic etc. Doing 70 means being stuck between dementedly wavering lorry drivers, usually.

Trying4Baby1 · 22/07/2009 19:00

I keep putting my washers on and off and after a while they get pissed off at constantly having to wipe their windows and the majority of the time they back off. It is annoying and bloody dangerous too. I once had a guy sitting up my arse when I was doing 70 on the dual carriageway with my friends son in the back seat. At the time I was driving a little 205 so if there had been an accident we would all have been killed.

asicsgirl · 22/07/2009 19:34

i hate tailgaters too. drives me insane. my dad was one too, full of irrational RAGE at other drivers, and i picked up a lot of his habits before realising i was driving like a twunt. i am still known to yell 'Don't signal I'll guess! it's more fun!!!!' at people however. and am trying to rid myself of persistent urge to shout '%£$&ing idiot!' at people who are driving badly when I am not even in the car

but i never speed 'cos I know the stats. too horrible to imagine. and if i piss a few other drivers off, too bad.

Tumbleweed · 23/07/2009 12:51

LOL at asicsgirl. Same here ... er, except perhaps some slight allowance for car's speedo being on the slow side (so it can look like it's got a higher top speed). Love Trying's suggestion. Will try that top tip! Illegal to have jet on back with dark, runny paint ..? ;)

AitchTwoOh · 23/07/2009 14:57

why does the washers thing bother them, i don't understand. trying's not the only person to have mentioned it.

Chluro · 23/07/2009 15:43

YANBU! I have a bumper sticker that is a picture of a tortoise and says "6 points, thats why" as I do indeed have 6 points all for speeding
