To think that a reference to your "DH" is a bit rich...

when you're in Relationships moaning about the fact he's physically/mentally/emotionally abusive, an alcoholic/drug-addict/gambler a cheat/pervert/gay and asking for advice on how to cope/leave him?

Really, is he really and truly your "Dear/Darling Husband/Partner"? Really?

I find it quite astonishing that there are so many women in so many seemingly inappropriate adult relationships who refer to their abuser as DEAR.

i don't think it's a bit rich

i think people use it almost reflexively

pollywobbledoodle · 17/07/2009 12:14

plenty of words that begin with d.....

belgo · 17/07/2009 12:14

I think they use it without thinking about what the D means.

DebiNewberry · 17/07/2009 12:14

it has come not to mean dear though. dh, to me just means h.

it is just a signifier.

if op was to put h it would be understandable but slow the flow of reading as it is not what is expected.

Alambil · 17/07/2009 12:14

it's just the acronym - people might wonder what a random h in a sentence meant

and also, even when you're being abused, you still may love the person

Morloth · 17/07/2009 12:15

Damned starts with a D as well, Dickhead, Dumbarse, Dumb, Dippy, Deranged, Dopey etc. I tend to read nice posts as Dear Husband and not so nice ones as Damned Husband.

jumpingbeans · 17/07/2009 12:15

They mean dh = dick head

TrinityRhinoHasASillyStepson · 17/07/2009 12:17

I read 'dh' to mean husband

I know the d means darling but it just has become an easier way to type husband

jeminthepark · 17/07/2009 12:18

at jumpingbeans

MamaLazarou · 17/07/2009 12:18

YABU

It's just a shorthand term for husband.

Waspie · 17/07/2009 13:39

I personally think the whole "D" prefix to be a ridiculous affectation.

Of course my son is the most precious thing in the world to me but I don't see why I need to refer to him as "dear son" in a chat room! It sounds as though I'm writing him a letter.

MrsMcCluskey · 17/07/2009 13:41

if yo dont like it dont use it.
Easy as

frumpygrumpy · 17/07/2009 13:44

are we having this conversation?

Its a term.............

good afternoon everyone

OrmIrian · 17/07/2009 13:44

Could be 'dickhead'. Or dastardly. Or deadly. Dangerous. Drug-addicted. Dismal. Oh this is fun....

However it is possible to still think of someone as 'dear' even if they are causing you grief. If it wasn't DS#2 would rarely by DS

TwoJobsOneManOneBump · 17/07/2009 13:47

Dratted, Delinquent, DeadIfICouldGetAwayWithIt, Doggone, Doofus...

BitOfFun · 17/07/2009 14:00

Departed?

skihorse · 17/07/2009 16:06

I am very much enjoying your alternatives!

yanbu

I have never got to grips with the D anything - children, brother, husband

MaggieBeBold · 17/07/2009 16:11

I hear you. I say xp. WHen I was with him I never refered to him as dear, not even as shorthand on a forum.

MaggieBeBold · 17/07/2009 16:12

Departed!? like that one. I departed him.

MaggieBeBold · 17/07/2009 16:14

I'm terrified that I will refer to somebody in real life as my SIL. Or something equally geekish.

TrillianAstra · 17/07/2009 16:19

YABU, it just means husband.

junglist1 · 17/07/2009 18:36

I agree bollocks to the D. Mine is either P or on a bad day "my twat"

skihorse · 17/07/2009 18:41

No, it does not mean husband, that would simply be "H".
