to think a childminder should provide fruit and veg every day

my friend has just told me her dd's childminder doesnt provide fresh fruit and veg daily as part of the menu and sahe wasnt sure whether to be annoyed

for example, lunch was sandwich and crisps

dinner was chicken nuggets and smiley faces

I was shocked, but maybe I have been spoled by dd's nursery that has a lovely menu with fresh fruit and veg every day and every meal

are me and my friend being unreasonable>

Is there any guidance anywhere that says she should provide fruit and veg or is it one of those unwritten expectations?

ginger - then i blame your friend(mum) for not making her dd like/eat fruit and veg

its not up to the cm to sort out fussy eaters imho - tho obv should put veg on plate at meal time and try to presuade the mindees to eat

As a CM I provide all meals and snacks (OK DH cooks most of them and we batch freeze, but they are made from scratch)

Todays menu was Weetabix, with strawberries for Breakfast, Yogurt and wholemeal toast.

We had snack at Soft Play so they had Carrot cake and raisins.

Lunch was Chicken Casserole followed by a Apricot then yogurt.

Afternoon snack was crackers cheese and Apricots or Plums.

I have on Monday a 4 year old starting who wont eat Veg but will eat Fruit.

So I will hide veg in Pasta sauces and make my secret gravy which is blitzed veg, watered down and gravy browning, as well as each day putting one whole piece of Veg on his plate.

He came today for a visit and wasn't going to try Apricots so got out the pasta jar, we had a discussion about that he could put a piece of pasta in the jar for everything he tried and would get a prezzie if he filled the jar.

He tried a Apricot, loved it and had two!

fab idea shoshe

always good to bribe get children to try new things

shoshe · 15/07/2009 21:50

I fully agree with bribing children

And ys we did have a lot of Apricots today, they were very ripe and my 2 year old would eat them all day if she was allowed.

Child minders are supposed to encourage healthy eating.

yanbu

I also would worry about a cm who was cooking such poor, lazy meals if it was all the time. It's part of her job to provide healthy meals even tho I agree she can't make the kids eat them .

Does your friend have other concerns - for example about how much stimulation her dd is given, play materials, too much tv etc? Might be time to switch ...
