...to want to spend 3k on bookshelves...?

titferbrains · 13/07/2009 13:54

before you judge me...

we buy all our furniture on discount it seems, and factory outlets etc. I'n a sale junkie and where I'll spend hours hunting for discounts once we know what we want, my DH tends to spend 3 minutes looking before either getting fed up or buying something nice but not necessarily the best choice (eg cream rug the year before we had our baby. Great. I didn't argue with him because it was in the sale and I'd struggled to persuade him to even come to the shop...)

We also were left a few grands'worth of stuff when we moved into this house, because the sellers were moving to oz and clearly couldn't ship it all.

We have loads of books and I've spent years ogling those fabulous italian style arty cool book shelves and I know we can afford them, it's just that it seems loads because we always get stuff on sale!!!

my hubby works hard and we are comfortable, just think I'm going to struggle to persuade him on this one.

i do like the fancy twirly whirly bits but they might become annoying

Rhubarb · 13/07/2009 14:35

I think it looks horrible and I'm sorry but I do think that spending £3k on bookshelves is wasteful.

As is telling the whole of Mumsnet.

(I lose my job this month)

FAQinglovely · 13/07/2009 14:37

BoF - they're not quite the same - hasn't got the (waste of space ) sticky out bits at the ends

I have seen ones like yhe OPs somewhere though.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/07/2009 14:39

I like them and I am sure that from close they won't look/feel like anything in ikea.
But I would consider the bespoke option as well as you could design them so that they fit exactly your needs, your stuff and your house. We did this as we needed them for two rooms in the alcove space and the result is so original and useful I could not have bought anything to match.

FAQinglovely · 13/07/2009 14:39

I like this (not as a pure "bookcase" - but still wouldn't pay 3k for it)

mumtoted · 13/07/2009 14:41

Yes they are lovely but will they still look as nice when full of tatty paperbacks?

zeke · 13/07/2009 14:41

I agree about getting a carpenter/joiner to make some for you, too.

I don't think that look like 3K worth, at all.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/07/2009 14:43

Oh here we are again...

Rhubarb · 13/07/2009 14:44

Here we go again what? Someone thinks that spending £3k on bookshelves is obscene, considering the situation a lot of Mumsnetters find themselves in during this recession, and you say "here we go again"?

Go shit on a stick.

titferbrains · 13/07/2009 14:46

I really like the irregular style of the viaduct ones, sticky out bits for knicknacks -~I'm seeing these as display shelves really. They need to be tall as room has hi ceiling and is big.

Will look into carpenter tho.

Have a rare day to myself to go shopping as DD is recovering from cancer and cannot go on public transp. Trying to figure out where to go - will prob trek to east london and have a look at all the arty furniture shops there anyway.

I've seen these on Ebay actually sold by a retailer for about 300 quid

I'm SURE of it, will hunt

FAQinglovely · 13/07/2009 14:49

and I'm inclined to sort of agree with Rhubarb here.........

morningpaper · 13/07/2009 14:50

this very similar for 275.00

titferbrains · 13/07/2009 14:51

faqing, that case looks very nice but am a bit scared that it's a drawing and that I'd have to get it sent over from india... I'd really like to buy somehting in the uk, credit crunch and all, I want to support UK businesses!!

Actually am thinking I need to go on an interiors forum. There is a funny little alcove in the room that could also use a carpenters magic touch to make a desk and shelves, so maybe I should just talk to a carpenter eh?

OP posts:
DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/07/2009 14:51

I can understand you might be feeling a bit rough at the moment but there's no reason to forget your manners my dear.

The OP did not hijack a 'recession' thread to talk about her shelves. For what I know Mnet is an open public forum where people can discuss various issus. Surely we are allowed to discuss money and purchases eventhough times are hard.

Thunderduck · 13/07/2009 14:52

I wouldn't pay 3k for those. They aren't particuarly attractive.

Rhubarb · 13/07/2009 14:54

And since it's a free forum, we are allowed to come on and tell her that it's wasteful. After all, it is posted under AIBU.

So shove yer "Oh here we are again... " somewhere dark and smelly.

morningpaper · 13/07/2009 14:54

Or you could SHOW that picture to a carpenter

Then get it made in proper wood with paint instead of powder-coated crap

The former will last forever for a third of the price

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/07/2009 14:54

titferbrains I had our made simlar to those irregular ones in white, can email you pics if you like.

(btw I do not even understand why you even felt you had to justify yourself... surely people are entitled to spend their money however they want).

Feelingoptimistic · 13/07/2009 14:55

If you have the money, then it's worth getting something you like. But not sure about that one you have linked too..

I would love something like this:

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 13/07/2009 14:56

Of course YANBU if you have the money, can afford and like them. They are a quality item.

And the stuff about it being obscene that you are spending £3k on shelves when others are losing their jobs is a complete red herring. We need spending to kick start the economy and keep manufacturers and retailers afloat.

titferbrains · 13/07/2009 14:57

morning thanks for that. not bad actually. But I think I'd prefer solid wood. I tried to pick a lovely just off white for our walls but once finished it just looked cream - so wood will match better and will also suit the room.

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 13/07/2009 14:58

Let's hope they're British then eh?

Oh dear, I don't think they are.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/07/2009 14:58

I still don't get the reason for all this anger .
And surely there are better ways to express your opinion than through such rude insults. But hey each to their own.

edam · 13/07/2009 15:00

Are you an MP and can you stick them on expenses because you need to house your extensive collection of copies of Hansard?

If not, then get a local cabinet maker in and get a tailor-made job done for half the price.
