to not want to dress DS in blue 'cheeky monkey' clothing?

DS is due in 10wks, why oh why can I not find bright clothing for him?

I don't want pale blue, greys, murkey off-colours with slogans such as 'cheeky monkey' and 'little monster' stamped all over the items.

I want bright/bold sleepsuits, bright vests, bright velour suits and un-sloganed!

Why do clothing manufacturers think my child is going to be a 'cheeky monkey'? If I walk into any highstreet shop I am faced with a pale blue section, a pale pink section and a greeny/yellow section.

Don't get me started on clothing for 4yr old girls!

Rainbow Babies

H&M as well.

i agree, flatly refuse to dress ds in cheeky monkey, mummys messy/noisy/loud boy etc. dont want to give him that label as i think its negative not cute. its the only thing i made a stand on before he was born. have been given a few things with it on, luckily usually socks but wont wear them out of house. lots of stuff from h+m, next. john lewis does fab boys clothes and its good price, 3 long sleeve t shirts for £10 amd hes worn them for over 3 months, got another set in their sale for only £5.

CherryChoc · 30/06/2009 23:09

Boots is fab, you can browse on line at minimode.co.uk/ Mini Mode website - there is some "cheeky monkey" "noisy boy coming" etc rubbish but some really nice stuff as well. Look at the bright t-shirts with lions etc on!

Also they have a nice pair of (ok, blue but better than mud ) light fabric, long trousers at the moment. And I LOVE the manic whale!

fruitstick · 30/06/2009 23:21

I heartily agree, can't stand pale blue.

M&S have some great bright spots/striped vests at the moment although the matching sleepsuits are a bit girlie.

Also agree John Lewis and pumpkin patch are lovely.

these are great but a bit pricey.

I hate the whole cheeky monkey business/up to mischief nonsense.

I love Pumpkin Patch, the clothes are gorgeous for boys or girls.

The real problem starts once boys are over 4/5 everything is camouflage or even worse slogans (you'll be wishing for a simple 'cheeky monkey'!)or Ben 10 / transformers etc. Arrrggghh!

Just want to say thanks for this thread. I'm expecting my first in October, but don't know whether I'm having a girl or a boy. I KNOW that I can just buy plain white, and they don't need a huge amount, but I'd really love to buy some nice things. But EVERYTHING is either pink or blue, or really really dull.

I find it strange that more retailers haven't cottoned on to the fact that first time mothers to be can be easily duped into shelling out huge amounts for clothing but won't risk buying something gendered if they don't know the sex. There's a big opportunity out there for one of the mainstream retailers to do more stylish gender neutral newborn stuff.

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy surfing some of those links. thanks everyone.

I get lovely stuff for ds4 from Boots, I don't mind OK slogans though- I ahve no isue with @Mummy love me' or the @I Love Daddy' shirt Dh bought him on father's Day, just negatiove or unfriendly ones

DS4 suits bright redds and blues best, primary colours. So that is what he wears. And in summer he may not have floaty dresses, but I am a great fan of romper suits until at elast age 3 (have 4 boys, I know my boys clothes LOL)

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 01/07/2009 19:00

(agree with it gets worse over 5- sheesh! I don't mind explorer / insect tye themes but ahte camouflage, irates etc) though

TabithaTwitchet · 01/07/2009 19:09

If you like plain, bright colours, I got most of DD's sleepsuits and vests from this
site

radstar · 01/07/2009 22:20

i sympathise - my ds is 13 weeks and he was given a blue and brown cheeky monkey outfit, he'll have to wear it but I don't really like it slogans just aren't my thing.

However he was given two lovely bright outfits one with frogs, one with elephants on. I looked up the websites;

LyraSilvertongue · 01/07/2009 22:25

There's plenty out there. You just have to look a bit harder.
I've just bought my boys some fab polo shirts from Joules. Lovely colours and really good quality. They're advertised on the MN home page I think.
Baby gap was also a good one when they were tiny. Try Pumpkin Patch too. And Mini Boden.

MamaHobgoblin · 01/07/2009 22:40

Get some plain sleepsuits and tie-die 'em. DS was unique and slightly grungy for a lot of last summer!

My mother was a star with finding us non-Boy stuff before DS was born. Lots of it came from Du Pareil au Meme, which does wonderful unisex stuff in great, funky colours. He looked lovely in an orange, coral and jade babygro!

John Lewis can come up trumps - really nice Hawaiian-style shirts there at the moment. Also at Baby Gap, and the sale's on!

Supermarkets often come up with things in unusual colours too. Just stay away from Mothercare, it'll make your blood boil!

woozlet · 01/07/2009 22:50

I like the 'little monkey' stuff, not so much if it says cheeky though. Not a fan of pale blue, much prefer bright stuff. I got some nice bright clothes in debenhams.

CherryChoc · 02/07/2009 12:49

Actually I am noticing bright things more, if you look. The pale blue and mud-coloured things we've got for DS mainly seem to be hand me downs, so perhaps retailers are getting the message!

cheesesarnie · 02/07/2009 12:53

theres lots of stuff now.mine are all dressed in 2nd hand and we have no trouble with finding things.

if you cant find anything, get making!

CherryChoc · 02/07/2009 12:55

Oh also, meant to say, I have got some lovely vests from ebay but have barely found any nice bright vests except sometimes one in a pack of 6 pale blue/white ones. Also I pop into charity shops every time I'm in town and buy anything bright in a size bigger than DS is now - you can pick up lots of nice, cheap clothes this way, and when he gets to the appropriate age I just go through and see what he is short of.

Ebay tip - go onto the "baby clothing" section without typing anything into the search bar, and then under the Refine Search bar on the left, click "choose more" a box will pop up with some options, you can tick/untick boxes and then at the right you have options to refine for size, colour, brand etc. I usually tick everything except blue and pink (including "not specified") and the size that I want, then sort by price and you can find some good bargains that way.

Qally · 02/07/2009 20:21

Ooh radstar, my ds has the Toby Tiger elephants one! He also has the "sausage" one, it's a really lovely blue and he looks fabulous in it. (Me? Biased? Never!)

BloodshotEyeballs · 15/10/2009 19:22

YABU there is plenty out there if you bother to look for it. However if you want to swing down the road and buy something in the first shop you see then you have to take what's fashionable at the moment.

And I can't be doing with this anti slogan stuff. Cheeky monkey, so what. Does it really matter?

MinkyBorage · 15/10/2009 19:26

Polarn O Pyret has the best buys clothes EVER and they are starting to expand throughout the UK. Other than that I always find a few nice bits in hennes, although I really do agree with you, it's really hard to find nice stuff, and I get sick and tired of everything having bloody ears on it, fgs this is a baby not a bear!!
